SUMMER!  There is nothing like the warmth of the sun and fresh air to help you relax and clear your mind. Getting outdoors…whether to bask in the sun, picnic at the beach, check out the sights in a new city or exercise…is what I love about the summer months.

However, being rather pale, the sun and I don’t always have the best relationship!  I burn easily, I get heat rash (yeah!!) and I overheat easily. Summer skin care is super important for us pale girls.   🙂  If you are like me, here are some tips to help you put your best skin forward over the coming months. These tips will help you to beautify your skin from the inside and out.

Don’t Overdo It!

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration

While spending 8 solid hours at the beach sounds heavenly, it is best to ease your way into the sun. A few hours, especially early in the season may be all you can handle. Don’t overdo it in the sun.

Wear Hats!

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration

There are a lot of adorable floppy summer hats out there to choose from. There is no excuse for not having one. A large brimmed hat will keep your head cool, protect your face, shoulders and eyes and keep the top of your head from burning.  I also always wear a cap when running or hiking in the summer months.

Drink H20!

drink-lemon-water

This is a great habit to have year round, but it is even more important in the summer. Staying hydrated is just so important. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go and keep sipping throughout the day. Don’t wait until you are thirsty. I find that by adding a few slices of lemon or lime to my water I drink a lot more. If you are tired of water, try unsweetened lemon green ice tea.

Use Sunscreen (ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS)!

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration

The most critical aspect of summer skin care is to wear sunscreen. Whether you plan to be in the sun for 15 minutes or 5 hours, it is so important to use sunscreen to protect your skin. Skin cancer is no joke!

I am loving the New Hawaiian Tropic® Silk Hydration Weightless Lotion Sunscreen Pump. It is so lightweight that you can barely feel it on. It doesn’t leave that greasy feel on you either. Also, it totally smells like summer!

Recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation to protect against the sun’s harmful rays, Hawaiian Tropic® Silk Hydration Weightless Sunscreen provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, and it is available in SPF 30 (which is what I use).

Cover it Up!

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration

Don’t head to the beach without a cover up. Limiting your direct exposure to the sun is helpful in preventing burns. Personally, I find that a cover up also helps to cool me down. Make sure your cover up actually covers you!  Don’t pick one with spaghetti straps because you need to cover your shoulders and chest.

Eat Right!

Your summer skin care routine should include eating right.  There are so many abundant fruits and vegetables in the summer months. Eating right will help to give your skin a healthy glow. You will be amazed to see how closely healthy skin and healthy eating are linked.

More Tips!

  • Applying a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.
  • Re-applying your sunscreen every two hours and more often if you have been sweating.
  • Keep sunscreen in your purse, at work and in your car. You never know when you will need it.

What Else?

For your face try Hawaiian Tropic® Silk Hydration Face Lotion. It moisturizes with a lightweight feel. Also try some after-sun products to soothe and moisturize skin that has been exposed to the sun.

Scrub it Off!

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration

Exfoliating your skin helps to give you a healthy glow. This homemade pineapple sugar scrub smells amazing, leaves your skin so incredibly soft and gently exfoliates without irritating. The best part is that it is so easy to make and it lasts for a few weeks.

I have pale skin too, and going from a cold winter to a sunny summer is just murder on it! I have to be so careful. I’ve already burned this year, even though I applied sunscreen. Lesson learned: always reapply sunscreen after the recommended time!

  • What I want to know is where your hat is from and love your doughnut float! I have one! Also its always important to wear sunscreen!

  • Subhadrika Sen

I like your hat. I have one but its not that big and nice. but works for me even then :P; I have a very sensitive and oily skin so with summers i have to take extra care of it. I usually drink water, try to walk in the shadows of buildings ; eat lots of fresh fruit, and I use a sunscreen serum. I cant use normal sunscreen because most of them have an oily base which is no good for me.

  • ThisKenyanTraveler

I need that hat. I love it. I always have to remind myself to wear sunscreen. You look amazing. Thanks for the tips

  • MJ

Sunscreen is an absolute must for me. I forgot to apply some a few days ago and needed up with sunburn on my eye lids of all places.

  • strangedaze
