My Trip To Northern Norway

In September I went on a trip to northern Norway for 10 days. It was an amazing trip and I will never forget it. Definitely a trip of a lifetime and it was certainly the highlight of my year. We were there in early September and we got to experience great weather most days…although it was chilly and best of all we got to see the aurora most nights.

A HUGE thank you to Joel Schat for filming all the content, taking photos for me and for being the best travel buddy anyone could ask for.  🙂 If you don’t follow him already, go check out his Instagram and YouTube channel.

It was quite the journey to get to the Lofoten Islands. We flew from Vancouver to Copenhagen and then to Oslo. From Oslo we flew on small planes to Tromsø and then finally to Leknes. We rented a car in Leknes and drove about an hour south to Hamnøy.  There we stayed at the Eliassen Rorbuer cabins. You can check out my blog post about staying there here.

I highly recommend that  you rent a boat and explore the Hamnøy area by water. We had the best time boating. In the morning the water was calm and no one else was out. The boat allowed us to explore the Lofoten Island area and provided a different perspective. You really can see how quickly the mountains rise out of the water. The landscape is so different from my home in western Canada…even though I live in the mountains.

I am sure you recognize these cabins. You see this photo of the  Eliassen Rorbuer all over Instagram. I am so glad that we stayed there.  They are cozy cabins and centrally located in the Lofoten Islands. You can get this photo just over the bridge when you are driving to Hamnøy.

This is one of my most favourite videos ever!

If you follow my Instagram, you saw my Aurora Borealis posts from Norway. This was my first time seeing the Northern Lights and WOW…it was unforgettable.

This was taken right outside our cabin. We really couldn’t believe how breathtaking it was.  I will never forget these nights…although we didn’t get much sleep.  You can check out Soft Serve News to track where the Aurora will be. Thanks to Joel for this tip. 🙂

Each day we tried to do a hike or two. Most were fairly easy and close to where we were staying.

This is the view from the Offersøykammen hike. It is about one 1km to the top and takes approximately an hour. Sadly when we did the hike there was no view from the very top because it was so foggy but we walked just a bit down and were able to capture some great shots.

Joel has a YouTube video of our trip that you MUST check out….HERE.

This is also at Offersøykammen near the middle of the mountain. It is such a pretty little lake. You can get an amazing view from here if you don’t want to go all the way to the top.

This is the view from the Mannen hike, which takes about an hour. It was my favorite for so many reasons. It was a super easy hike and the view is so incredible. The water looks tropical blue and it made you forget that you were in the Arctic. However you won’t think you are somewhere tropical too long because it was really cold up there…at least it was in September. I will never forget  this amazing view.

Another hike we did in Lofoten was Ryten.  It was another amazing hike and only took a few hours. It totally took my breath away. It really seemed like we were on top of the world. At the top it was super cold, so bring lots of layers.

We also attempted another hike, but had to turn back because the trail was not in good shape and it was really unsafe. I hope next trip the trail is repaired and we can make it to the top. Here is the view from where we got.

For the second part of our Norway trip we drove about 6 hours north  of Hamnøy to get to Senja. It was a beautiful drive! We spent two nights in Senja and we stayed at the Hamn i Senja resort.  You can read my blog post about our time there here.

The day were arrived we hiked to see Mt. Segla in the afternoon.  For this hike, which is also a pretty easy two hour hike, both trails starts from Fjordgård.   You will need to hike Mt. Hesten to see Mt. Segla. The view here though…unforgettable!!!! This was Joel’s favourite hike.

I still cant get over this view so amazing. I would love to go back when it is snowing. In fact, I really want to go and do this same trip again when there is snow.

We also went out in a boat in Senja and it was also amazing. It was a a lot colder there than it was in Hamnøy but then again we were way farther north in the Arctic.  After 4 full days and nights in Lofoten, we were pretty tired by the time we got to Senja.  We only really shot sunrise and sunset there and it was so nice to have time to relax there. We did work and napped most days. It was raining one day then cleared up at night which was perfect.

Again were were very lucky to see the northern lights when we were in Senja. I was so blown away by them each time and they never got old.

One evening we were blessed enough to see bioluminescence in the water and the aurora in the sky. I have a feeling that it was a once in a lifetime experience.

The final part of our Norway trip took us south. From Senja we drove to Bardufoss and flew to Oslo. From Oslo we flew to Molde. Since we only had 10 days, we flew instead of driving. I am sure it is a beautiful drive though. Maybe next trip we will drive. We rented a car in Molde to get around from there.

We drove to Ålesund which is such a cute little town with colourful buildings. I could have spent a whole day exploring here, so I will have to get back again one day when I have more time.

This viewpoint at the top of Mount Aksla gives a really great view of Ålesund.  It is an easy trail with just over 400 steps (with handrails in some points). At this location you can also drive if you prefer.

This crazy photo was taken in Geirangerfjord.  To get to this viewpoint, drive all the way down the road and up the mountain and you will find the viewpoint behind the bathrooms (lol).

There is a small path hidden behind the bathrooms. You walk down and you will see the lower path were Joel was standing to take this picture and then where I am standing you just walk a little bit further up. Be careful because it is dangerous!! I used to be really scared of heights…but not so much anymore.  🙂

The last location we went to was Trollstigen which has this switchback road through the mountains.

You get an idea for the scale of things in this video by looking at how small the cars are on the road.

On our last full day we flew from Molde to Oslo where we ended our trip to Norway. There is so much more that we could have seen there, so I hope that one day we will get back. I was not expecting to fall in love with Norway, but I really did. If you ever get a chance to go, don’t hesitate…it is AMAZING!
