Top Must See Waterfalls In Iceland

Iceland is a pretty magical place. If you ever chance to visit….go! I am happy to share my top must see waterfalls in Iceland that I visited on my last trip. There is something about waterfalls that are pretty amazing and I try to find them wherever I visit. When you visit Iceland you will soon realize that it has a LOT of waterfalls.

I went to Iceland in early May. It was pretty cold there, so just a friendly reminder to wear lots of layers. The wind is especially chilling. All of these waterfalls are really easy to get to. For most of them it is a short walk to these waterfalls in Iceland.

Seljalandsfoss

This waterfall is right off the side of the road and it is one of the first ones you will see as it is close to Reykjavik. Since it is close to Reykjavik, it was the busiest of the waterfalls we visited. Get there early to avoid the crowds of tourists.

The first image for this waterfall was taken on top on the little cliff at the side of the waterfall. It was very muddy when I was there, so watch your step if you choose to see the view from there.

Skogafoss

This was definitely my favourite waterfalls in Iceland that I saw on this trip. It was huge!! It was such an amazing blue sky day when we went, which makes for good photos. I have seen so many stunning images of it when it is snowing and I would love to go back to check it out in the winter. This is a big waterfall so you can really hear and feel it when you are close. You will also get pretty wet from the mist!

Svartifoss

This epic waterfall is surrounded by dark hexagonal basalt columns (which the internet  told me). I just thought they were cool rocks! These rocks definitely make for a unique look surrounding this waterfall.

The first shot at Svartifoss is taken from the first waterfall you see on the walk up. You aren’t really supposed to sit on the edge here, so please be careful if you do. I was holding on very tight!

The second image is taken at the waterfalls but just over the fence.  You really can’t miss visiting this waterfall.

Godafoss

Godafoss is one of the most famous of the Skjálfandafljót River waterfalls in Iceland and it is pretty breathtaking. Definitely one you can’t miss if you visit.

Aldeyjarfoss

We were lucky to visit Aldeyjarfoss on a beautiful day. Joel and I drove here and we couldn’t believe our eyes at how amazing this place was. You have to drive on an F Road (which some cars aren’t allowed to go to on) but we had no troubles.

The second image is shot at the bottom of the waterfall. It is really easy to get to the bottom and contrary to what you might think it is not a hot spring…it is a cold pool lol!!! I was freezing during this shot but you do it for the photo…am I right?!?

Dettifoss

Dettifoss is a huge waterfall…like biggest waterfall we saw on the whole trip. It is also so pretty! We were there for sunrise and it was amazing to watch the sunrise over the waterfall.

Kirkjufellsfoss

Kirkjufellsfoss is the next waterfall on our list  that we stopped at. Sadly it was so cloudy and foggy that you could not see the mountain in the background….which would have made the photos even better.  However, it was still really pretty. I believe you see this one on A Game of Thrones.
