Living Life On The Go with Diabetes

Living life on the go is hard when managing diabetes but it is all fun and games now that I started using the new Accu-Check Guide System. Y’all know I am on the go 24/7…from traveling to adventures and hikes. I never seem to have a second!!!  Even though  I am on the go I always make sure that my blood sugar levels stay good.

Like I said in my last post, which you can read here,  having diabetes wasn’t going to stop me from living my life. I get questions every day from diabetics who don’t workout hard enough or are scared to go on hikes because they will go low… that shouldn’t even be the way have to live your life. Having Type 1 diabetes shouldn’t stop you from anything.

Just be prepared…that’s the key to diabetes management.  I am training for a 10k right now and I have a running belts and I keep sugar tablets in there and I make sure I bring water. I listen to my body and slow it down when I need to.

I want to share a little bit about how carb counting works. It is an integral part of diabetes management.

For example, if you are eating 2 pieces of toast and half an apple for breakfast…that is a total of 62 grams of carbs. My insulin ratio is 1:10, which means for every 10 grams of carb, I need 1 unit of insulin.  In this toast and apple example,  I would need 6 units of insulin. However, for me since I am super active most days I always give a little less. Everything is math with diabetes management and you start to feel that your body is a science project! 🙂

Though it’s a constant learning curve, I am most definitely figuring out how to manage my diabetes and it is the most liberating feeling. The Accu-Chek Guide System gives me the autonomy, knowledge and control I was scared I would lose. It allows my body and I to work together rather than against one another. I feel reassured knowing what my blood sugar is at and confident that I know how to fix lows before they happen. I have learned more about my body in the past year than I could have ever imaged.
