Self-care is vital to your health and wellness. Taking time to listen to what you need and doing something about it will help you build the best and strongest you. I have a tattoo on my hip that says “love yourself first”. It is a constant reminder that I need to make “me” a priority every single day.
Having some items on hand such as a water bottle and fresh fruits and vegetables are essential. There are many companies who make excellent products, such as Cetaphil® (which is the #1 Dermatologist Recommended Facial Skincare Brand), that you can use daily as you develop your rituals for self-care.
This time of year, when school is starting up, the seasons are changing, and you start new routines, it is especially easy to let things slip. I find it is easier to carve out time for self-care in the summertime. Maybe it is just the longer summer days and the energy that comes from sunshine and vacations.
Here are 8 ways you can practice self-care (inside and out) daily to build a better you:
Best Face Forward
Before going to bed and after waking up, it is very important that you cleanse and moisturize your skin. Even if you don’t wear makeup it is important to wash and moisturize…your skin will thank you! Putting your best face forward is one of the best ways to give you confidence to tackle what comes your way each day.
Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser, which I pick up at Walgreens, is as gentle as it gets — it soothes and cleanses, leaving your skin smooth and soft. It has a mild, soap-free formula that cleanses without irritation…which is important for someone like me with sensitive skin.
Let’s not forget the next step in putting your best face forward…moisturizing! Apply moisturizer like it’s your day job!
Moisturizers keep your skin hydrated, which in return gives you full and firm skin. Cetaphil®Cetaphil absorbs quickly for immediate hydration. It is dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested so you don’t have to worry about any harm to your skin. I also LOVE that it is fragrance free.
You can find a variety of Cetaphil moisturizers and cleansers at Cetaphil. It’s so easy to run in and grab, so pick some up on your next trip! 😊
Through September 27th, you can save $2 on ONE Cetaphil® product at Walgreens!
The ultimate way to a healthy lifestyle is to get enough sleep. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Early to bed, early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise”. Your body will thank you for giving it the time it needs to recharge. As hard as it may be, a regular sleep schedule is one of the easiest ways to help you wake up feeling good.
Although it might not always be deep sleep, I find that quiet time or a quick nap can recharge me completely. Listen to your body and try to give it what it needs. Set a timer so that a mid-day nap doesn’t interrupt your sleep that night.
Be Sun Smart
The best advice I can give is to apply SPF every single day. To keep your complexion looking its best, you need to apply sunscreen even if you are not going to the beach. Your skin will thank you now and later! This is one aspect of self-care that you can’t afford to neglect.
Physical activity is essential to effective self-care. Physical activity increases blood and oxygen flow to the skin cells and will cleanse the skin from the inside. Exercise also helps to reduce stress and gets blood flowing to your brain to help you think clearly. The benefits are numerous…which is why you need to get out there and move EVERY SINGLE DAY!
You don’t have to go to the gym, either. Get outside…fresh air is a good thing. Take your dog, a friend or your favorite music and move, stretch and work up a sweat. You can do this. Your body will thank you.
Happiness is the key to success. Approaching each day with a positive and constructive attitude is so important. Learn to let go of the things and people that aren’t contributing to your happiness.
Aligning yourself with positivity is so important for self-care. Disconnect from social media, pamper yourself, journal, connect with friends, cuddle your dog or just dance when the music moves you. Let’s make happy the new trend.
Do what makes your soul sing!
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
When your body is deprived of water, your skin will become dry and look dull. This is why I rely on Cetaphil’s DailyAdvance Lotion to replenish my skin when I’m feeling dehydrated. I personally find that when I am dehydrated I get bad headaches and feel lethargic. Water really is vital to thriving!
I have read that you should aim for drinking eight glasses of water daily. Tired of drinking water? Try adding berries and fruit to your water to naturally flavor it. I literally carry a water bottle with me everywhere I go. I find that if I have it with me, I drink it.
Eat your way to health this fall and winter! There is no better way to practice self-care than to fuel your body right. You need to eat healthy to be healthy. You need to eat good to feel good. A diet containing a lot of fruits, vegetables and lean protein works well for me.
Plan your meals so that you have no excuse for not eating right. Eating foods that are high in Vitamin C will help keep your immune system strong, so include citrus fruits, kiwi, and broccoli in your winter diet. A healthy diet will also help you by fighting hunger, keeping your mood stable and decreasing your stress levels.
Take Time to Reflect
Social media is such an integral part of our lives. Most often people only post the good things in their life so it is important to keep that in mind. It is hard to practice self-care when you’re comparing your life to everyone’s highlight reels. Take the time to break away from social media and allow yourself to focus on the beauty of the moment.
For me this may be some early morning meditation, journaling, quiet time or deep chats with my dog Beau. Do what you need to reflect on what is positive in your life.
I hope you find these tips helpful. I am a work in progress and it is important to recognize that we all are. Remember to love yourself first and you will see that slowly so many aspects of your life change.
