Christmas Deviled Eggs Ingredients
Hard boiled eggs are of course the star of this Christmas deviled egg recipe. You will need a dozen of them to make 24 deviled egg halves. The deviled egg filling is a tasty combination of mayonnaise, dijon mustard (or even yellow mustard), lemon juice, garlic, onion, fresh rosemary, and thyme. For the garnish you need rosemary and red bell pepper. You can also add some salt and pepper if you wish.
How to Make Christmas Deviled Eggs
Fancy deviled eggs, which are a popular appetizer, begin as hard boiled eggs, so make those first by boiling your fresh eggs in water and then letting them cool. You could even cook the eggs in an instant pot. Carefully peel the cooked eggs.
Cut the eggs in half lengthwise and put the yolks in a bowl or large measuring cup. Arrange the whites on a plate or deviled egg platter.
Mash the egg yolks with the remaining ingredients, using a hand mixer if you have one so the filling ends up smooth. You can use a food processor if you want the filling to be extra smooth. Transfer the mixture into a piping bag with a piping tip and pipe it into the egg white halves. If the filling is smooth enough you can use a large star tip. I like my egg filling a little chunky so I just cut a hole in the piping bag.
How to Serve Christmas Themed Deviled Eggs
Depending what kind of plate or platter you want to serve the holiday deviled eggs on, there are different ways to present them.
You can arrange them in a circle so they look like a wreath perhaps, adding fresh herbs for a festive splash of green color. Arrange the Christmas deviled eggs however you want. Perhaps line the platter you’re using with some festive green and red paper napkins or similar for a festive touch.
Perhaps you’re making these as part of a Christmas potluck this holiday season and maybe doubling or tripling the recipe so it serves a lot of guests. In that case you can still arrange them in a circular pattern but fill in the circle with all the Christmas eggs.
Maybe you already have a deviled egg plate or raised egg platter which is a great kitchen accessory if you often make egg dishes like this.
Christmas Eggs Tweaks and Variations
This is such a versatile egg recipe. Serve it as a first course or make the deviled eggs for Christmas parties. It’s a great appetizer either way.
Feel free to make any adjustments you want to the recipe. If you like spicy flavours you might like to sprinkle chilli pepper for the bell pepper in the garnish. Or else you could add some cayenne or chilli powder to the filling.
Rosemary and thyme add festive green colour as well as flavour but you can use another type of fresh herb if you prefer – maybe basil or oregano. You can also add color with food dye such as adding green food coloring or red food coloring to the devilled egg filling. Avocado filling is also a nice holiday alternative
Pomegranate seeds could be used on these Christmas deviled eggs instead of the red pepper along with rosemary to look like holly berries and greenery as a garnish on top.
Christmas Deviled Eggs FAQs
Prepare this Christmas party favourite up to two days ahead of time if you like. The best thing to do is keep the filling separate from the egg whites. Then you can simply pipe it in shortly before serving. If you want to make another variety, these Bloody Mary deviled eggs are incredible too.
If you have some left over and they haven’t been out for more than two hours, you can keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Eat them within a couple of days. If they’ve been sitting at room temperature for more than two hours, you should probably throw them out just in case.
A piping bag fitted with a star tip or a pastry bag will give you the prettiest results or, if you don’t have one, you can use a Ziploc bag with the corner snipped off. A third option is to use a couple of teaspoons to add the filling. This won’t look as elegant but if you use a large piece of red pepper and a whole herb sprig or large leaf as your garnish, not much of the filling will be visible – and they’ll still taste just as delicious.
Yes. To avoid a green yolk, cook your eggs to the desired length of time. Then place the cooked eggs into ice water to stop the cooking process and minimize the reaction of the iron sulfur. The ice bath also makes peeling the eggs easier.
