Are you going to make Halloween monster cookies for your Halloween party this year? This sweet treat can be made in different colors and they’re tasty treats.
If you love spooky treats, also try candy apples, caramel apples or this pumpkin cheesecake with a black crust.
You will need vanilla cake mix for these Halloween monster eye crinkle cookies. I love the Betty Crocker mix but perhaps you have your own favourite brand. In addition, grab some oil, eggs, food colouring, powdered sugar, and edible candy eyeballs (which you can order online).
How to Make Colourful Monster Cookies
So now you’re wondering just how easy these spooky treats are. You will be pleasantly surprised! The cake mix can be combined with oil and eggs. Divide the dough into 3 equal(ish) pieces. These easy Halloween cookies are sure to become one of your favourite delicious recipes for Halloween.
Then you can add the colouring. I used orange, black and purple food colouring, which are cool Halloween colours. You can use whichever colours you want. Perhaps you only want two colours for these spooky Halloween treats. If so, divide the mixture into 2 instead of 3.
Now the exact amount of food colouring you should add to these cake mix Halloween cookies varies. It’s best to add a little bit (a few drops) and mix, then add more and mix again. Continue until the colours look good. I like to use gel food coloring because it gives a nice vivid colour to the chewy cookies.
Now you should have your coloured dough. The important thing to do here is to put the dough in the freezer for half an hour. Don’t omit that step because once the dough is firmed up by freezing, the cookies will hold their shape much better during cooking.
After that, you can divide the dough into individual cookies. I like to use this small cookie scoop. It’s a great investment if you like to bake or if you plan more baking in your future! This scoop holds 2 teaspoons of dough, which is enough for a 2-inch diameter cookie.
Roll the cookie portions in powdered sugar then press them down. At this point I like to put the rolled cookie dough balls in the freezer for 5 or 10 minutes to firm them up again. Trust me, this helps with a perfect result!
Now take your Halloween crinkle cookies out of the freezer, add the edible monster eyes to the top of the cookies and bake until done on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. You can serve these in little stacks. These monster eye cookies are awesome for a Halloween table centerpiece. They are a great alternative to a sugar cookie and a fun way to celebrate before the Halloween candy comes out.
There are lots of easy Halloween cookie decorating ideas to choose from. I especially love these Halloween cake mix cookies because they’re so easy. Halloween monster cookies also come out perfectly every time. Even if you’re relatively new to baking, you’ll find these cake mix Halloween cookies wonderfully easy.

If you have kids, I think they’d love lending a hand making spooky Halloween treats like these little monsters with you. You can help smaller kids cut the themed cookies out. Older ones can mix the dough.
These simple monster crinkle eyeball cookies can also be flavored however you want, so if you want to add vanilla extract or something like hazelnut or rum extract, you can tweak them to your heart’s content. Make this Halloween cookie recipe you own! It is the perfect cookie for busy moms because it is an easy recipe with simple ingredients. These cookies have been around since the early 1800s and I’m sure you’ve seen them in bakeries during the holidays as well as on holiday platters.
