Medication Adherence – It’s Important

If you’ve followed me for a while, in particular my Type 1 diabetes story, you’d know that I had my wake-up call a little over two years ago now. I was constantly tired, parts of my body would become numb and my vision would blur on multiple occasions, especially while traveling. One time it was bad enough that I had to pull over while driving and call my mom.

Medication Adherence

It was soon after that I was diagnosed with Type One diabetes. Since then it has been an uphill battle learning to control my insulin levels. This becomes particularly tricky with my busy travel schedule. That’s why I am grateful I was introduced to The Walgreens app early on in my diagnosis. It has made managing this disease easier and improved my medication adherence while traveling and it can absolutely do the same for you!

Often times when traveling for work I will visit multiple cities over the span of a week or two, or even a month. I have spent up to 6 weeks straight away from my routine and home. With the constant time changes it can be difficult to remember to take my insulin or any other medication I may need on time, especially when I’m jet lagged and sleep deprived! The Walgreens app helps me remember to fill prescriptions, so I’m always ready for my next adventure!

I quickly learned the importance of taking medication as prescribed by a doctor (aka medication adherence). I learned the hard way how much better I can feel when I am diligent and timely with my injections and prescriptions. This disease reacts well to consistency with medication, diet, exercise and sleep. Having diabetes isn’t easy for anyone, let alone a young woman with dreams of seeing the world. However, it’s manageable with help from tools such as these.

Sometimes if I am on back-to-back trips, it can slip my mind to refill prescriptions before my next getaway. Naturally this oversight has the potential to leave me stranded out of country and without my medications for days or weeks at a time. Thankfully, Walgreens offers Save a Trip Refill and Walgreens Express to help make medication refills quick and easy. If only getting through airport security was such a breeze.

Another invaluable feature of the app is its 24/7 Pharmacy Chat. No matter where I am in the world, no mater what language the local pharmacist speaks and no matter what time zone I’m in, I can have any medication question answered at my fingertips.  This becomes incredibly useful if I have a pressing question and can’t get a hold of my mom right away! Aka my forever on-call doctor. 🙂
