Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the yeast, sugar, warm water, and olive oil.
  • Let mixture rest for 5 minutes or until the yeast blooms and is puffy.
  • Add salt, egg and 2 cups flour.
  • Using a dough hook, mix for 1 to 2 minutes on low speed.
  • Add remaining flour gradually.
  • Knead the mixture on medium speed until it becomes a smooth ball and the bowl is mostly clean.
  • If the mixture sticks to your finger, add more flour 1 tablespoon at a time until you’ve reached desired consistency.
  • Shape dough into 12 balls and space out in greased baking dish.
  • Let dough rest for 10 minutes.
  • Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until tops are golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and brush tops with melted butter, if liked.

Notes

Check water temperature: Too hot kills yeast, too cold slows it down.
Let the yeast bloom: Leaving the yeast to bloom for 5 minutes should activate it, and the mixture should look puffy.
Don’t skip the rest: The short rest lets gluten relax for softer rolls.
Add flour gradually: Prevents adding too much and making dense rolls.
Use a stand mixer: Saves time and keeps the texture light and airy.
