Ingredients

For the Dough:

For the Filling:

  • 1 Cup cream cheese cut into cubes

For the Glaze:

Optional Topping:

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a bowl, mix warm milk, warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add melted butter, egg and salt.
  • Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead (or use a dough hook in the stand mixer) for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth.
  • Cover and let rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.

Shape the Rolls:

  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 to 16 equal portions.
  • Flatten each piece, place a cube of cream cheese inside, and seal into a ball.

Assemble the Honeycomb:

  • Grease a large ovenproof skillet or cake pan. Arrange the filled dough balls close together, forming a honeycomb pattern.
  • Cover and let it rise again for 30 to 40 minutes.

Bake:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Add the Glaze:

  • Add the ingredients to a small pan and bring to a boil.
  • Simmer for 3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Brush over the warm rolls right after baking and sprinkle with sesame seeds if liked.
  • Let the bread cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Kneading the dough: You can either knead the bread dough by hand or use the dough hook attachment in your stand mixer.
Allow time to rise: Allow at least an hour and a half for the dough to rise.
Seal the rolls: Make sure the dough is closed around the cream cheese pieces, otherwise it will run out.
Serve them warm: If you've just cooked honeycomb bread, let it cool a bit before serving, as they'll be steaming hot straight from the oven. If it's cooled down, warm it up slightly in the oven to make it pillowy soft again.
