Picturesque beaches, magnificent churches, colorful buildings, and gorgeous natural areas that will take your Instagram to the next level.
Beyond the main sites, you’ll learn about several secret Oaxaca photo spots that you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve also included insider tips to help you capture the most Instagrammable spots in Oaxaca during your trip.
1. Santo Domingo de Guzmán
From the golden-gilded interior to the rows of maguey plants in its front plaza, Santo Domingo de Guzman is one of the most photogenic churches in Oaxaca. Santo Domingo is also a main gathering point, so you may visit this spot in the historic center more than once.
I recommend taking photos during the late afternoon when the sun lights up the front of Santo Domingo Church and beams into the golden interior domes.
Insider Tip: You can also take a great photo from one of the rooftop restaurants near Santo Domingo.
2. Oaxaca City Botanical Gardens
Located behind Santo Domingo Church, the ethnobotanical garden is home to hundreds of native plants. A tour of the botanical garden regularly tops the list of the best things to do in Oaxaca City.
During the tour, walkways lead you past succulents, orchids, and native trees to the most visually striking feature in the ethnobotanical garden.
A wall of vibrant green organo cactus juts into the sky and reflects into the shallow reflection pool below. It’s easily one of the most Instagrammable spots in Oaxaca City.
Insider Tip: A guided tour is the only way to access the botanical garden. English tours are scheduled Monday-Saturday at 11 am. Arrive about 30 minutes before to secure your spot.
3. Monte Albán
This must visit spot is perched on a hilltop overlooking the city and the surrounding valleys. The views from Monte Alban are as Instagrammable as the ancient ruins themselves.
This UNESCO site was the most important Zapotec city in the area. Monte Alban features multiple pyramids, an ancient ball court, and a geometric-shaped building that served as an astronomical observation center for the Zapotecs.
Insider Tip: The blue 20 peso note depicts a sweeping view of Monte Alban on the backside. For the best Instagram shot, stand at the top of the pyramid near the north platform and hold up the 20 peso bill with the same views in the background.
4. Hierve el Agua for Stunning Photos
To take photos at one of the best Instagram spots in Oaxaca, you need to take a day trip to Hierve el Agua. Located in the mountains two hours outside of the city, this site consists of a series of petrified waterfalls and natural pools. The rolling mountains and deep valleys provide an incredible backdrop for stunning photographs.
To capture the best photos of Hierve el Agua, it’s best to start your day trip early. I recommend taking photos when you first arrive. Then hike down the path for better views and photos of the petrified waterfalls before returning to the top to swim in the pools at Hierve el Agua.
5. Mitla, Oaxaca
On the way to Hierve el Agua is the small town of Mitla and the second most important archeological site in Oaxaca. Mitla was considered the portal to the underworld by the Zapotecs who inhabited the area.
As you wander through the maze remnants of this ancient city, there are plenty of Instagram photo opportunities – from framing a subject with the stone archways to the unique geometric patterns that decorate the structures.
6. Agave Fields
The entire process of mezcal production from the harvest to distillation is Instagrammable. But you’ll take the best photos in the rows of agave fields that dot the landscape surrounding Oaxaca.
A mezcal tour is the best way to get access to the fields and take an incredible photo. Plus you’ll learn about this trending spirit and experience a mezcal tasting in the process.
7. El Tule Tree
Considered sacred by the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures, El Tule is a massive Montezuma cypress tree that is estimated to be over 2,000 years old.
Its extremely buttressed trunk helps to claim its status as the widest tree in the world. Located in the center of Santa María del Tule, about 30 minutes east of Oaxaca, this large tree sits in front of the main church.
Interesting Fact: El Tule is sometimes called the Tree of Life. Look for the various animal figures that appear in the gnarled trunk, such as an elephant, jaguar, and others.
8. Cuilápam Convent
This off the beaten path destination is one of the best Instagram spots in Oaxaca that almost no one knows about. The construction of the Templo de Cuilapam de Guerrero was started by the Dominicans in the 1500s but it was never completed.
Today this abandoned structure turned museum gives off deserted ruin vibes. The massive complex resembles a castle with an opportunity to take an incredible photo at every turn. My favorite part is the open chapel featuring dozens of green quarry stone arches. It is the perfect setting for a photoshoot.
9. San Jose del Pacifico
South of Oaxaca City is known for its incredible mountainscapes located more than 8,000 feet above sea level. Within the mountains are the small towns of San Jose del Pacifico and San Mateo Rio Hondo.
Both towns draw tourists for their mushrooms of the magical variety. Although, it’s the gorgeous setting that makes these spots in Oaxaca truly magical.
Visiting San Jose del Pacifico feels as though you are living amongst the clouds. To capture incredible photos, spend an evening watching the sunset above a sea of pillowy clouds.
10. Sierra Norte, Oaxaca
The remote Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca is made up of one picturesque town after another, including Cuajimoloyas, Capulálpam, Ixtepeji, and more. Together they make up the Pueblos Mancomunados, a community effort that was created to entice tourists to visit the area. As a result, they have been able to promote tourism and preserve the beauty of the natural landscapes.
They offer ecotourism adventures including hiking and birdwatching as well as native plant and mushroom identification. The towns feature beautiful trails, scenic views, and wood cabins that are available to rent for the night.
If you want an authentic experience in the Sierra Norte, I recommend hiring a hiking guide from the community. For a great photo opportunity, walk across the suspension bridge in Cuajimoloyas or Benito Juarez as the fog rolls in from the mountains.
11. Santiago Apoala
The piercing blue waterfalls and natural pools of Santiago Apoala are one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the state of Oaxaca. Located about 4 hours north of Oaxaca City, this small town is the perfect weekend escape.
Insider Tip: For the best photos, avoid the rainy season (June-September) when the rains can kick up the sediment on the bottom and turn the water brown.
To visit Santiago Apoala, rent one of the rustic cabins and hire a guide from the community. They will be able to show you the best waterfalls and Instagram spots.
12. Playa Carrizalillo
Tucked into the coastline of Puerto Escondido is Playa Carrizalillo, one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. This beach cove is surrounded by tall cliffs and towering palms.
Its golden sand and playful waves entice beach lovers down the more than 50 steps to the ocean while taking a few Instagrammable photos along the way. Swimming at Playa Carrizalillo in the late afternoon is one of my favorite things to do in Puerto Escondido.
Bonus Beach Tip: Located about 40 minutes southeast of Puerto Escondido is Playa Agua Blanca beach, is a great location for swimming in the tidepools and enjoying fresh oysters to finish off the day.
13. Sea Turtle Release in Puerto Escondido
Watching baby sea turtles start their new life as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean is an incredible experience. Every evening on Bacocho Beach in Puerto Escondido, Vivemar allows visitors to participate in their sea turtle preservation efforts for a small donation.
You’ll receive a newly hatched turtle to release into the ocean, giving it the best chance to survive. As the baby turtles slowly make their way to the waves, you’ll have the opportunity to take Instagrammable photos of their journey.
Insider Tip: Check your camera settings before you receive your turtle so that you’re prepared to take great photos.
14. Sunset at the Arch in La Punta
At the far end of Zicatela, the famous surfing beach in Puerto Escondido, is La Punta. This area is known for beginner to intermediate surfing, beautiful sunsets, and natural rock formations. The latter two make it perfect for Instagrammable photos.
Instead of watching the sunset from the beach, climb to the top of the point and descend onto the beach below. There you’ll find incredible rock formations and a natural rock archway. If you time it correctly, you can capture the sunset through the arch with Puerto Escondido in the background.
15. Punta Cometa, Mazunte
Punta Cometa is the southernmost point in Oaxaca and has been a spiritual site since before the arrival of the Spanish. Today travelers visit Punta Cometa to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.
The site consists of three parallel ridges that jut into the Pacific Ocean. Waves crash into the rocks below while birds soar overhead. I recommend arriving about an hour before the sun actually sets to capture beautiful photos of the light streaming across the volcanic black sand of Mermejita Beach. Make sure you add this to your list of Oaxaca Instagram spots.
16. Teatro Macedonio Alcalá
Located in Oaxaca centro, Teatro Macedonio Alcalá is characterized by its green quarry stone exterior and emerald green dome.
For a great shot of the outside of the theater, arrive in the afternoon to photograph the dome lit by the golden hour sun. If you’re visiting Oaxaca, Mexico during the rainy season, try to take a photograph after a storm to catch the reflection of the theater in the puddle that forms in front.
Insider Tip: If you’re able to see a show, the inside of the theater is also one of the best Instagram spots in Oaxaca Mexico.
17. Nieves at the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad
The ornate facade of the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is Instagrammable in itself. But as a bonus, this spot includes eating ice cream in the attached plaza.
Called nieves, or snow, this is a traditional Mexican cuisine for dessert or a sweet snack. The classic flavors to order in Oaxaca are leche quemada (burnt milk) with tuna fruit (prickly pear cactus). The color combination of white milk ice cream paired with deep red from the tuna fruit creates an Instagram worthy photo.
18. Jalatlaco Neighborhood
The picturesque neighborhood of Jalatlaco is one of the top Instagram spots in Oaxaca. Cobblestone streets are lined with colorful buildings, cute cafes, and incredible street art.
Jalatlaco was awarded the first “magical neighborhood” in Mexico due to its historical significance and undisputed charm. Simply wander the streets near the church in the evening golden hour to discover the best photo opportunities.
Insider Tip: You’ll find the best street art on 5 de Mayo and Aldama Street. Keep your eye out for murals by Bouler, one of my favorite Oaxacan street artists.
19. Xochimilco Arches
The former aqueduct in Oaxaca stretches from the north of the city into the historic neighborhood of Xochimilco. Towards downtown Oaxaca are stone arches and small alleyways whose blooming bougainvillea create one of the best spots for a photo.
If you feel like wandering to photograph street art, follow the arches past the highway to explore the artsy vibe of the Xochimilco neighborhood.
20. Rooftop Cocktail
Oaxaca City has some great rooftop bars and restaurants that offer spectacular views. For the most Instagram worthy spots, snag a seat on one of the rooftops with views of Santo Domingo.
Top picks are Pitiona, Vaca Marina, and Praga Coffee Bar. Go in the late afternoon when the golden sun illuminates the front of the church.
21. Oaxaca Te Amo
Formally called AM Siempre Coffee Shop, Oaxaca Te Amo changed its name to match the incredibly popular neon sign that has become one of the best Instagram spots in Oaxaca, Mexico.
The name, which translates to “Oaxaca, I love you,” perfectly describes the feeling bestowed on many travelers after spending a few days in the city. To take a photo with the sign, I recommend arriving in the late afternoon to sip on a coffee or agua fresca in the courtyard.
22. Graphic Art Workshops
In addition to street art, Oaxaca is known for its many skilled graphic artists. The prints they create often have a strong message within the art that is political or social in nature.
You will find graphic art workshops as you walk around, although a few of my favorites are Hoja Santa, Espacio Zapata, and Taller Artistica Comunitario. The walls inside are filled with art prints and you can often see an artist working on a new piece.
23. Day of the Dead
Día de los Muertos is one of the most culturally beautiful celebrations in Oaxaca. It’s a time when Oaxacans remember and connect with their loved ones who have passed.
In anticipation of their souls visiting, the city is awash in yellow marigold flowers days before Day of the Dead. Families spend their time building altars to remember those who have passed. They place photographs, candles, and their favorite foods and drinks to entice the souls for a visit.
Then on the evenings of October 31st, November 1st, and 2nd they gather together in the cemeteries to tell stories and reminisce about their loved ones. The gravesites are beautifully lit by candlelight and decorated with marigold flowers to help the spirits find their way.
You can respectfully visit the cemeteries to observe this celebration of life and take stunning photos. I recommend going to the cemetery in Xoxocotlán, also referred to as simply Xoxo (pronounced ho-ho). Please remember, to politely ask before taking a photo of people inside the cemeteries.
Insider Tip: Buy a bundle of marigold flowers, called cempasuchil, outside of the cemetery before you enter. Inside the cemetery, it’s common to place a few flowers on gravesites without decoration or visitors.
24. Guelaguetza Festival
Another cultural heritage celebration in Oaxaca with an opportunity to take gorgeous photos is the Guelaguetza Festival. Each year in July, the Central Valleys invite groups from throughout the state of Oaxaca to gather in the capital for the Guelaguetza.
At its core, the Guelaguetza Festival celebrates the diversity of Oaxaca and its 16 indigenous groups. The name (which means offering) implies a reciprocal exchange. Throughout the month of July, there are parades, tastings, and dances that share the unique dress and culture of each region.
25. Wedding Parade
If your trip to Oaxaca doesn’t coincide with a festival, not to worry. Parades are an every day affair in Oaxaca and if you don’t randomly stumble upon one, you can find a wedding parade on the weekends.
You can pretty much guarantee there will be a wedding at Santo Domingo Church every Friday and Saturday afternoons. When the ceremony concludes, a parade welcomes the bride and groom as they exit the church. Add this to your Instagram photo ideas in Oaxaca!
The wedding party will dance in front of the church for about 20 minutes before parading down Alcalá (the walking street). You can watch the parade and follow along the path, taking photos along the way.
Insider Tip: To find a wedding parade, look for the giant puppets created to resemble the bride and groom. They will lead the parade from the church, down Alcalá.
