What is Agua Fresca Anyway?

Agua fresca is the Spanish name. Agua means water and fresca means fresh or cool. Fruits, flowers, seeds, cereals, water, and sugar are typical ingredients in such a drink. Hibiscus, tamarind and horchata are common flavours in an agua fresca recipe.

Non alcoholic refreshing summer drinks like this are worth knowing and you can always adapt them when making your own.

Agua de piña refers to pineapple and while ripe pineapples are perfect for aguas frescas, you could also use frozen pineapple chunks or another fruit altogether. Serve chilled aguas frescas and everyone will want to be your friend!

I love to make this summer drink with pineapple though. It’s such a tasty fruit!

In Mexico, street vendors have their own agua fresca recipe ideas and you can buy various flavours from them. You can also order them in restaurants, juice bars and find them in Mexican convenience stores.

And then there are other types of agua fresca with chia seeds, cereals or even flowers like alfalfa or hibiscus. Once prepared, agua fresca is ladled into glasses.

Agua Fresca with Pineapple Ingredients

All you need to make this delicious Mexican beverage is pineapple, water, lime juice, and honey. For the best result, use fresh pineapple chunks and squeeze your own lime juice.

How to Store Pineapple Soda

  • Freeze: This drink does freeze well, so you might want to freeze it in individual servings, then thaw overnight in the fridge, or serve frozen like a type of slushie.

Serve this Mexican beverage recipe over ice if you like or just cold from the refrigerator like many other refreshing fruit beverages.

Garnish it with mint or basil if you like, and perhaps some fresh mint. If you have some fresh pineapple left, a chunk of that always makes a cute garnish. This is one of the most refreshing drink recipe ideas ever, and it’s so easy to make.

An agua fresca recipe will taste somewhere between water and juice, since it’s basically a combination of those. It’s lighter than fruit juice and very hydrating because of the high water content and the electrolytes from the fruit.

This Mexican beverage recipe is great to refresh you during hot summer days. It’s traditionally a non-alcoholic drink recipe. But if you wanted to liven it up with a splash of light rum or tequila, I won’t tell!

Is Pineapple Agua Fresca Like the Fresca Soda?

Fresca is made by Coca-Cola and comes in different flavours. It’s been around since the 1960s and is better known by the older generations. It’s somewhere between a flavoured water and a soda in taste. Fresca comes in citrus, black cherry citrus and peach citrus flavours. There are no calories or sugar in Fresca and it makes a nice mixer with alcohol.

This pineapple agua fresca recipe is similar to Fresca but there’s no comparison really since we are using fresh pineapple. And fresh fruit always wins! This Mexican thirst-quencher is a rich source of vitamins and antioxidants, thanks to the fruit. It’s also hydrating and delicious. This summer drink with pineapple or other fruits is also popular anywhere north of the border where there are Mexican populations.

Agua Fresca Beverage FAQs

Can you add alcohol to this?

It’s your drink so you can do whatever you like with it! A shot of rum, vodka or (in keeping with the theme) tequila will certainly liven it up.

Would canned pineapple spoil the flavour?

To be fair, preparing fresh pineapple is worth the effort just because it has a fresher flavour, but if you can’t get fresh pineapple then yes, you can absolutely sub canned, preferably in juice rather than syrup.

When making your own, use very ripe fruit because it is sweeter. In fact, this is a great way to use up fruit which is a day or so past its best.

So, cheers! Or as they say in Mexico, salud!
