Homemade Starbucks Medicine Ball Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Water: Forms the base of the tea mixture and balances the tartness of the lemonade.
Lemonade: Adds a bright citrus flavor and natural sweetness.
Mint tea bags: The mint flavor provides a refreshing herbal note and cooling finish. You can use mint tea or mint green tea. (I used Teavana Jade Citrus Mint).
Peach-flavored tea bags: Offer a fruity and slightly floral undertone. (I used Teavana Peach Tranquility).
Honey: Sweetens the drink while helping soothe the throat.
Lemon slices: Used as garnish and for a little extra citrus brightness.

Substitutions and Variations

Use chamomile tea: Substitute chamomile for the mint tea for a calming twist.
Add fresh ginger: Simmer a few slices of fresh ginger for an extra kick.
Switch the tea: Use your favorite green or herbal teas in place of mint and/or peach. Any good quality tea with natural flavors would work.
Added immune support: Grate in some fresh ginger or add ground turmeric.
More zesty: Add freshly squeezed lemon juice.
Add alcohol: A splash of rum, brandy or whiskey is an optional extra (strictly for medicinal reasons, of course!)
Sugar free: Enjoy it unsweetened or try this sugar-free honey alternative for a keto-friendly version of medicine ball tea.

How to Store Medicine Ball Tea

Store: Let it cool to room temperature and keep it in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freeze: I don’t recommend freezing it, as the flavor might change.
Reheat: Warm it back up gently in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stove.

Top Tips

Simmer don’t boil: The water and lemonade shouldn’t be boiling. A slow simmer is perfect.
Don’t over-steep: Longer steeping can cause bitterness.
Adjust sweetness: Add more or less honey to suit your taste. Not a honey fan? Use sugar, maple syrup or your sweetener of choice instead.
Serve fresh: This drink is best enjoyed warm, right after it’s made.

Medicine Ball Tea FAQs

What is Starbucks’ medicine ball tea?

Whether you’re trying to ward off a cold or help relieve congestion, this drink made with steamed water, steamed lemonade and 2 kinds of tea is a soothing option. Starbucks has rebranded the drink; when you order it now, it’s called honey citrus mint tea on the menu. Apparently the tea previously featured a blend of jade citrus mint and peach tranquility, but now appears to include only chamomile mint blossom. The official Starbucks version is made with Teavana jade citrus mint green tea and peach tranquility tea.

Can I use bottled lemonade instead of fresh?

Yes, bottled lemonade works fine in this homemade version. Choose one without too much added sugar for the best balance.

Is this drink caffeine-free?

It depends on the tea used in your copycat recipe. Mint is usually caffeine-free, but peach tea may vary by brand.
