Another idea is to freeze the mixture and make boozy popsicles. However, if you want to try this don’t put too much alcohol in the mix, else they won’t freeze! And then you’ll have peach tea slush instead of a popsicle.

History of Sweet Tea

You already know tea has a long and fascinating history but what about sweet tea and especially iced tea? It’s believed tea plants were introduced to the US by a French botanist in the 1700s.

Very soon iced tea recipes appeared in recipe books. And guess what – they all had alcohol in them! That’s right, this hard spiked iced tea lemonade is more vintage than you might think!

These green tea punches were known as Regent’s Punch. They were made from green tea, although today black tea seems to be the more popular option. These centuries old boozy iced tea recipes typically included brewed green tea, sugar, cream, and a bottle of claret (red wine from Bordeaux) or a bottle of champagne.

The first sweet tea recipe dates back to 1879. In this recipe, green tea is stirred into boiling water then left to brew for several hours. After that the mixture is strained and served with ice and sugar, along with optional lemon juice.

The first sweet tea recipe made with black tea dates back to 1904. Prohibition lasted for 13 years. Since alcohol was illegal at the time, iced tea recipes surged in popularity and pretty much every Southern cookbook from that period included at least one sweet iced tea recipe.
