Frozen cocktails have to be the ultimate refreshment. They’re fun to make and drink and their iciness will cool you down on a hot day. I always love a good margarita and I even stayed in Kissimmee’s Margarataville Resort on National Margarita Day a couple years ago.
Margarita with Melon: What are the Ingredients?
You don’t need many ingredients to make this honeydew melon margarita. The key ingredient is… you’ve guessed it! Fresh honeydew melon. Choose a ripe melon for this honeydew cocktail.
Lime juice is another important ingredient. Use fresh lime juice for the freshest flavour in this easy tequila cocktail. After that you just need tequila and sugar as well as ice. If you want to make a salty rim on the glass, you need some coarse salt too.
How to Make Honeydew Margarita Like a Pro
This summer cocktail recipe with tequila is simple to put together. Just add all the ingredients to a blender and pulse until you have a slushy texture. Transfer this easy tequila cocktail into a pitcher for serving.
To salt the glasses, rub a lime wedge around the rims and then dip into coarse salt, or rimming salt. You can then pour the frozen margarita mixture into the glasses. Add a lime wedge for garnish if you like.
Tips for the Perfect Honeydew Cocktail
If you don’t have fresh fruit, you can make this margarita with melon that’s frozen. Use it while it’s still frozen since this is a frozen drink anyway. If you’re going to do this then you can use half the amount of ice. The frozen melon will thicken up the drink without needing the extra ice.
When I experimented with this summer cocktail recipe with tequila, I found the amount of sugar varies. Some melons are really sweet and others not so much. So I would recommend you start with half the amount of sugar and see how it tastes. You can always add more as needed.
Some people don’t like frozen drinks or have really sensitive teeth. A too-big gulp can give you brain freeze as well! If you prefer your margaritas not to be frozen, then use fresh melon or thaw some frozen melon. Swap the ice in the recipe for a cup of cold water. You can serve the drink as it is or over ice cubes as you prefer.

Why Honeydew Melon is So Good
I never met a melon I didn’t like – cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon… they’re all so good! Honeydew is especially nice because of its natural sweetness. That’s what gave me the idea to make a honeydew melon margarita in the first place. And I’m so happy I did!
Honeydew melons can be oval or round. They can weigh up to 8 pounds. The flesh is green right below the skin and fades to pale green further in.
These melons might soften after picking but they won’t sweeten any more. A great source of Vitamins B6 and C, as well as fibre and potassium, the humble honeydew is nutritious as well as yummy.
This fantastic fruit features in various recipes from fruit salad to chilled soups. Of course making a margarita with melon is also a great reason for buying one. I like melon for breakfast too – either added to cereal or mixed up in a smoothie.
So where did the name come from, you might be wondering. The honeydew is a White Antibes cultivar which was first grown in the south of France and Algeria in the late 1400s.
One of these melons was served at a restaurant in New York in 1911. A guest saved a seed and sent it to a plant breeder in Colorado. The USDA renamed the melon to honeydew in 1915. These melons grow well in a dry, hot climate.
