I am a real strawberry fan and use these juicy berries in everything from strawberry lemonade bars to homemade oat bars. This strawberry paloma recipe is also wonderful. It’s a tequila cocktail recipe with fresh strawberries, grapefruit, honey, and ginger beer. This is an easy paloma recipe that will become a favourite! If you are looking for a cocktail with strawberries or a strawberry tequila recipe, this is one to try!

This is one of the most summery and most refreshing drinks ever. If you like strawberries, you’ll want to sip on these all summer long.

If you have some tequila lying around and you want to make something other than margaritas, this is great. It’s always worth adding an easy paloma recipe to your repertoire!

How to Make a Strawberry Paloma

The first thing to do, when making this strawberry tequila cocktail is ‘muddle’ the strawberries with honey.

Muddling is anywhere between smooshing and pulverizing! A muddler, which is a flat-ended plastic or wooden dowel, can be used for this, or you can just use a wooden spoon. A wooden meat mallet would also do the job. You just want to get some of the juices out of the strawberries so a gentle ‘smoosh’ would be enough.

The next step for this cocktail with strawberries is to add the tequila and grapefruit juice. You need to get everything well combined, so do this in a cocktail shaker. Give it some elbow grease – there’s no such thing as shaking too hard here!

Now you can put some ice in 4 serving glasses and pour the strawberry paloma over the ice. The final step in making this strawberry tequila cocktail is to add ginger beer. Ginger ale is similar, but I prefer ginger beer because the ginger flavour is more pronounced.

Not a ginger fan? Then seltzer water would work, or another kind of soda.

What is the Best Garnish for a Tequila Cocktail Recipe?

I used strawberry slices and fresh rosemary sprigs to garnish this strawberry tequila cocktail. Mint sprigs would also work, or how about lemon or lime slices?

Maybe you’d like to give the strawberry paloma a salt rim, by running a wedge of lemon or lime around the rim of the glass and dipping it in salt (or sugar). Obviously you’ll need to do this before adding the cocktail to the glass!

A salted rim is always good with drinks like this. There’s just a nice affinity between salt and an acidic juice. Acidic juices include lime, lemon or grapefruit – basically anything with the ‘pucker’ factor!

What Kind of Grapefruit Juice is Best for a Paloma?

You can juice fresh grapefruits to get the best-tasting juice. Another idea is to get the juice from the grocery store. Unsweetened works best in this recipe, because you can add honey to get the level of sweetness you want.

If you have sweetened grapefruit juice, that will work in this cocktail with strawberries. But depending how sweet it is, you might want to use less honey or leave it out altogether.

More about this Tequila Cocktail Recipe

Paloma is the Spanish word for dove. It’s also the name of this strawberry tequila cocktail. Traditionally it’s a combination of tequila, lime juice and grapefruit-flavoured soda (maybe Fresca, Jarritos or Squirt).

The rim might or might not be salted, and it’s usually served over ice with a lime wedge or slice. At its most basic, a traditional paloma is a combination of tequila and grapefruit-flavoured soda.

Similar Tequila Recipes to a Paloma

A cantarito is similar to this easy paloma recipe but includes lemon and orange juice for a more citrusy finish. Maybe you’ve heard of a greyhound which is either vodka or gin paired with grapefruit juice.

Margarita is another tequila cocktail recipe and also one I love. Margaritas get their sweetness from Cointreau while a paloma gets it from either using sweetened grapefruit soda or ginger beer.

It might surprise you to know the paloma is the national drink of Mexico. It’s the number one Mexican choice when it’s baking hot. Yes, that’s right – not the margarita!

This cocktail with strawberries is so refreshing. It’s only been around for some 20 years, a lot less than other cocktail recipes. But you can order an easy paloma recipe in bars all over the world and it’s known.

What Kind of Tequila is Best in a Paloma?

Whether you’re making a strawberry paloma or another tequila based cocktail, the tequila does matter. I recommend using a 100% agave tequila. If it isn’t labeled as 100% agave then it’s ‘mixto’ or blended.

Mixto is cheaper but nowhere near as pure and can contain sugar cane as well as various flavourings and distillates (other types of alcohol). As you’d imagine, 100% agave tequila just tastes better, and it’s my recommendation for this cocktail with strawberries if you want the cleanest taste.
