This has to be one of my all-time favorite cocktails. I also love sangria and margaritas. There’s just something so festive and fun about these drinks, especially when sharing with friends.

History of the Cosmopolitan Cocktail

Are you wondering about the history of this recipe with raspberry vodka? Before you find out how to make the perfect cosmopolitan, you might like to know a little more about this cocktail with orange liqueur.

The cranberry cosmopolitan, or cranberry cosmo (or just cosmo) as it’s also known, has been around for a while. Traditionally made with vodka, Triple Sec (an orange liqueur) and cranberry juice, as well as some lime juice, this easy cranberry cocktail recipe always goes down well.

Some people use vodka citron, which is lemon vodka, to make a cosmo. The exact history is disputed but there is a recipe known as Cosmopolitan Daisy dating back to the 1930s. That was made using gin, Cointreau, lemon, and raspberry syrup. It was shaken with ice and served in a cocktail glass.

Today learning how to make the perfect cosmopolitan is an easy skill to learn. Anyone can rustle up this delicious recipe with raspberry vodka and lime. You will need martini glasses to serve them, since that’s the traditional way. In fact, that’s why a lot of people mistake the cosmopolitan for a type of martini when it really isn’t.

I like to use raspberry vodka instead of the lemon vodka some people prefer. It just adds a sweet, fruity touch which contrasts with the cranberry. An orange-flavour liqueur such as Cointreau also adds sweetness. Cranberry juice cocktail is the easiest way to add that sharp flavour to this cranberry cosmopolitan. Fresh lime juice, some ice and a couple of strips of orange zest finish this cranberry cocktail with orange liqueur perfectly.

Cranberry Cosmopolitan aka Cosmo Variations

I love the way I make this recipe with raspberry vodka and Cointreau, but there are variations you can try! If you have all the ingredients but another kind of fruit flavour vodka, or even plain vodka, that would work fine.

Use any orange liqueur you want – Cointreau, Triple Sec or even a generic version. They will all add the tasty orange flavour to the drink.

If you are looking for a non-alcoholic version of this cocktail with orange liqueur then you can swap the vodka and Cointreau or Triple Sec for orange juice and pink lemonade. That way anyone who’s underage, expecting or driving can still enjoy it!

How to Make the Best Cranberry Cosmopolitan

You will need to grab a cocktail shaker and some ice once you’re ready to make this easy cranberry cocktail recipe. Use as much ice as you like. You won’t be serving it in the finished drinks. It’s just to cool the other ingredients in the cocktail.

Add the vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice, and orange liqueur. Give it a good shake and then pour the mixture into a martini glass.

The recipe makes two (or one large one!) but of course you can double or triple it to make several at a time depending how big your cocktail shaker is! See how easy it is to put together this cocktail with orange liqueur?

So now you can make the perfect cosmopolitan, but how should you garnish it? Well, I like to use a couple of orange zest strips, but a slice of orange, lemon or even lime can decorate the glass. Since you’re using fresh lime juice in the recipe, you can cut a couple slices off the lime.

Sangria, frozen margaritas or a cranberry cosmopolitan – pick your poison! Any of these drinks would be great for a girls’ night in.

If you want to learn how to make the perfect cosmopolitan though, there’s no time like the present. And you can drink your mistakes. You won’t make any though, at least not accidentally!
