Conspiracy theories have always been a part of civilization, but some stand the test of time and make some of us question the brainpower of our closest friends and family. Recently, people revealed the most untrue and ridiculous things that many believe are entirely valid. Prepare yourself for massive eye-rolling!

1. “I’ll Be There in Five Minutes”

Count me in as one of the millions who use this phrase regularly, and I still am shocked when people take it for face value. I can’t believe some people think “I’ll be there in five minutes” means anything other than “I’m still very far away!” One person puts it all into perspective. “Remember before cell phones how you just had to take someone’s word when they said they’d be there at 4:30 on Friday?” asks one person. “If they were late, you just assumed they either hated you or were dead.”

2. Privacy Is Upheld on the Internet

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your privacy is never guaranteed online. All the VPNs, ad blockers, cookie denials, and passwords in the world can’t keep your every move from being tracked by advertisers (and yes, even the government). Privacy on the internet is not a constitutional right, and the more people come to terms with this, the better off we’ll all be!

3. The Holocaust Didn’t Happen

Let me put this plainly: If you’re a Holocaust denier, you’ve got a few screws loose! Arguably, the biggest atrocity in human history definitely happened, and one person attempted to get to the bottom of how this conspiracy theory started.

“I talked to a history professor who specialized in World War II about this,” reveals one woman. “He said that much of the original denial started with people who lived in Germany at the time or were living elsewhere but of German descent. The theory is that those people could not believe their country would do such a thing. It was a mass cognitive dissonance.”

4. Michael Jordan Retired in 1993 Because of Gambling

The greatest basketball player in history is the subject of a long-standing theory that has been proved utterly false yet is still prevalent today. Many believe Michael Jordan was forced into retirement from the NBA in 1993 due to being secretly suspended for his gambling habits by then-NBA Commissioner David Stern. In the eyes of many, this would explain why Jordan would bizarrely walk away at the height of his career. However, “His Airness” has debunked this rumor, although many still don’t want to believe it!

5. Millionaire Politicians Will Represent the Working Class

Every election cycle, millions of Americans fall for the same lies by a handful of rich politicians: That millionaires have the best interest of the working class at heart. According to countless men and women, this is the most egregious thing people believe, but nothing changes. The status quo has been set. In the eyes of many, millionaire politicians only look out for other millionaires.

6. Your Tongue Has Separate Areas for Different Tastes

I distinctly remember learning that different tongue areas carried different taste buds in school (and I was amazed by this fact). However, in 2023, most rational people discovered this was a bizarre lie told to kids. Recent studies have shown that the taste buds are spread out pretty evenly across the tongue’s surface, effectively rendering what millions of children were taught as false.

7. The Moon Landing Was Faked

One of the more popular conspiracy theories is that the United States government and NASA faked the moon landing in 1969. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet or what your crazy Uncle tells you; the moon landing in July 1969 was genuine, and it represented the U.S. taking a giant step toward winning the space race with rivals like Russia. Yes, the video does look like it was edited, but what video from the 60s doesn’t look that way?

8. When You Shave, Your Hair Grows Back Thicker

Sorry, men, your hair does not grow back thicker when you shave. However, there’s science behind why it sometimes can look that way! “It’s thicker at the bottom of the hair, so when you shave it, the thick bottom becomes the new top,” explains one logical human being. Conversely, this logic applies to women who believe cutting their hair makes it “grow back faster.”

9. How To Deal With Bullies

Bullying

Prevailing parental wisdom says ignoring a bully is the best strategy for dealing with one. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case. “I was taught that if you ignore a bully, they will lose interest and leave you alone,” explains one man. “As a kid, I quickly learned that wasn’t true.” Many children find out firsthand that bullies don’t care if you ignore them or not; their harassment will continue until more drastic steps are taken.

10. Undercover Cops Must Tell You They Are Undercover

I blame television shows and movies for this specific myth: When a civilian asks, undercover cops must identify themselves as undercover cops! Unfortunately, this isn’t true in the slightest, and many people (especially college-aged students participating in underage drinking) have found this out the hard way! Undercover police officers are under no obligation to reveal who they are.

11. COVID-19 Vaccines Have Chips in Them

Some people have read too many science fiction books (or, most likely, spend way too much time on Facebook). Far too many men and women believe the COVID-19 vaccines contain a chip that can change human DNA, which is about the nuttiest thing a person could think. “This conspiracy theory popped up again a few months back with that smartphone emergency test that happened,” recalls one woman. “A bunch of people were convinced that it was going to activate something in the COVID-19 vaccines and turn people into zombies.”
