If you’re looking to update your bathroom without a renovation, you’ve come to the right place. Read on to see how I’m giving my mom a fun weekend bathroom makeover.
Low Cost Bathroom Updates
Let’s dive into it. It’s been about 12 years since my mom’s bathroom has been updated, which means it’s a little out of date. However, it doesn’t look bad! But making a few simple changes can easily transform it into looking more modern. It currently has classic white tiles, which makes it easy to change up the look without a bathroom renovation. We’re focusing on low cost bathroom updates that can be changed later on as her tastes change.
Luckily, a bathroom refresh can be done in as little as one weekend. Some of these changes can be made in as little as one day! If you’re looking to change up your bathroom, here are 10 easy ways you can upgrade your bathroom without a renovation.
Bathroom Refresh Transformation
It didn’t take long to make a big change to my mom’s bathroom. She had not done anything to it for about 10 years and wanted something cheery…she loves colour! Follow these steps for an easy upgrade for your bathroom.
1. Paint or Wallpaper
A fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into any room, and the bathroom is no exception. Don’t feel like you have to stick to white, but you certainly can use white to give your bathroom a classic, clean look. White makes a great blank canvas for other updates and gives the bathroom a lighter, sometimes airy feel. However, some people are painting their bathrooms with darker shades like black or navy for a darker elegance. Wall colour changes the mood of the bathroom and is an easy upgrade for your bathroom. For instance, I used white paint with a hint of grey to keep it classic. The neutral colours will make it easier to switch out different styles and decor.
Wallpaper is also a popular bathroom upgrade. You can choose a wallpaper with green plants for a jungle theme or blue for a calming ocean theme. Use printed wallpaper with a bold or subtle print, and your bathroom will feel unlike any other room in the house.
2. Replace Light Fixtures
Lights illuminate your bathroom and add decoration. The right light fixtures brighten up a small space and give it more personality. Whether you’re going for romantic lights, elegant light fixtures, or fun, bright fixtures, replacing the light fixtures is a fun, easy update for your bathroom. Replacing the light fixtures can be done in a weekend bathroom makeover! If you don’t want to buy new fixtures, you can even spray paint the ones you have if your budget doesn’t allow for new light fixtures. For my mom’s bathroom, the fixture didn’t really need replacing, but it was in DESPERATE need of a good cleaning to bring back the sparkle it had lost.
3. Deep Clean
Since you’re moving everything out of your bathroom, now is the perfect time to give it a nice deep clean. Get rid of all your old beauty products and things you don’t want or need. Then go in and deep clean with your favourite bathroom cleaner and magic erasers. Sometimes, just a deep clean can give you the same feeling as a full-on bathroom renovation.
4. Change the Mirror
One small change that makes a big impact is switching up the bathroom mirror. Vintage gold-plated mirrors are popular right now, but if that’s not your style then opt for something different! A large round mirror for your bathroom refresh will make a statement, or get a mirror with a statement frame.
You can also change your mirror to one that’s more proportional to your vanity. Mirrors add dimension and light to even the smallest spaces, so don’t be scared to add multiple mirrors. The right mirror will update your bathroom without a renovation.
5. Upgrade Storage Options
You don’t need to go through a bathroom renovation to add more storage to your space. You can add some open shelves to display some pretty towels or plants. If you don’t like the towel rack, add some towel hooks. An easy upgrade for your bathroom could be a unique bucket to hold toilet paper or extra hand towels. Making your bathroom more functional will always make it more enjoyable.

6. Change Bathroom Fixtures
Update all the bathroom fixtures for a clean, new look. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to install new faucets and showerheads, and it’s the perfect addition to a weekend bathroom makeover.
A fun low-cost bathroom update is a new shower head. A new showerhead can get you more options for water spray and pressure settings… and make you never want to leave the shower. I prefer a handheld showerhead because it’s easy to install and can be used in lots of different ways. I’m installing the Meon Magnetix handheld showerhead in my mom’s bathroom.
Why Use a Handheld Showerhead?
Like I mentioned above, a handheld showerhead isn’t just convenient for your hair. Everyone in your family will enjoy it, including your pets! It’s also an easy way to update your bathroom without a renovation.
Let me explain. A handheld showerhead lets you:
Wash Pets Easier
Have you tried washing your dog in a tub? It’s not fun. Enter the handheld showerhead, it is much faster getting your pup washed and rinsed since you can control the head.
Water and Clean Plants with Ease
Hopefully you’re taking my advice and adding plants to your bathroom! Plants look pretty in a bathroom, but they still need care. With the handheld showerhead, you can rinse off their leaves and water them easily without a mess. Simply move them to the tub to direct the head at the soil, or if they’re close enough, you can bring the showerhead to the plant!
The Easy way to Shave Legs and Wash Feet
It can get pretty annoying to have to wait several minutes to fill up your tub JUST to wash your feet or shave your legs. This is especially true if you have impatient kids. With the handheld showerhead, you can just rinse their feet right off in the tub. Shaving your legs is so much easier too. With the handheld showerhead, you’re not going to accidentally rinse your shaving cream off before you’re done or have your leg slip into the water. You know what I’m talking about.
Wash Kid’s Hair with Less Tears
I remember my mom washing my hair under the faucet, and it was not a pleasant experience. Your child doesn’t have to experience that same discomfort when you invest in a handheld showerhead. Since you can direct the showerhead where you need it, you don’t have to hold your little one’s head under the faucet while water falls in their face. Trust me, this is much easier.
Simple to Take a Quick Body Shower
Sometimes you don’t want to wash your hair when you jump in the shower. Sometimes you just need to rinse off. But you can never really seem to avoid getting your hair just a little bit wet in a normal shower. Fortunately, with a handheld showerhead, you can easily control where the water goes and just rinse off your body to what you need.
Rinse Shower Easily After Cleaning
Once you clean your shower, you have to rinse off the soap and bubbles to leave it sparkling. This can sometimes be a tricky task. Luckily, a handheld shower head lets you rinse your shower off easily.
Choose Your Spray Pattern
The Moen Magnetix Showerhead head lets you choose between 6 different spray patterns! This is great because if you’re sore in one spot, you can change the spray intensity to focus on one area. Or if you and your partner have different pressure preferences, you can both get what you want! Talk about low cost bathroom updates, you’re basically getting six showerheads in one.
Convenient Magnet System
Since the Moen Magnetix showerhead is magnetic, it’s really easy to use! There’s no insertion or places to click together. You can even change settings while you’re washing your hair and there’s soap in your eyes. It pretty much attaches itself!
7. New Linens
Towels, shower curtains, and rugs are the easiest things to switch out AND they can majorly change your bathroom vibe. All you have to do is pick up some new linens at the store or order them online.
As a low cost bathroom update, you can even keep multiple colors to change on rotation for different seasons or to do a bathroom refresh every so often. As your tastes and trends change, you can switch linens out again.
8. Add Plants
Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can bring plants into your bathroom! Plants are an easy way to bring life and color to a small (or big) space. Despite what you may think, some plants that will thrive in a room with artificial light, low light, and lots of bathroom humidity. Hardy plants such as snake plants, ferns, and Chinese Evergreen can take changing bathroom temperatures and low light. If your bathroom has bright indirect light, you can get a begonia, peace lily, or philodendrons. Plants are low cost bathroom updates that will bring life and colour into your space. Plus, isn’t it so fun to watch them grow?
9. Artwork
Who likes a blank, boring wall? Most people don’t. Spruce up the bathroom by adding fun artwork and prints to add more colour and dimension. For more drama, add large prints with different sizes in an asymmetrical fashion. Or add one very large piece of art as the focal point in the bathroom. Thoughtfully selected pieces of art update your bathroom without a renovation. This floral image is a stock photo that I printed and had mounted on foam core. If you want to take on another project, you can make a DIY custom wood frame for the artwork.
10. Refresh Caulking
What is caulking, you ask? It’s the material used to seal or glue materials that fill the gap between the bathtub and the wall and floor. It’s a tiny detail that you may not even think about in a bathroom refresh, but it’s an easy upgrade for your bathroom.
Do you need a quick bathroom refresh? Are you now thinking about a weekend bathroom makeover in your own space? Are you making a Pinterest board full of bathroom refresh ideas? What kind of changes will you make?
A bathroom refresh is easier than you would think and can be done in a weekend. These low cost bathroom updates will make you fall in love with your bathroom again and add more function (and cheer) to it.
