Ohh, denim jackets. The once questionable design of the 1800s adopted by miners, Hollywood stars, underground rebels, and luxury fashion connoisseurs alike is once again a prominent trend of 2021. We’ve seen it all. Classic borrowed-from-the-boys denim patterns, slim-fitted silhouettes, cropped, distressed, or adorned with fur, denim jackets for women have long been a coveted outwear piece for all seasons. The shapes might constantly be changing, however, what goes around, evidently, comes around-so don’t be quick to dispose of your trusted denim jackets from high school yet.
When Did Denim Jackets Become Popular
Although all of us own at least one, chances are that most aren’t familiar with the history of denim. You see, blue jeans, now called “denim”, were originally manufactured in the French town of Nîmes (bleu de Nîmes). The most notable classic jeans made from indigo-dyed denim were patented in 1873 by the tailor Jacob Davis, and Levi Strauss, owner of a fabric house in San Francisco. Denim jackets for women obviously weren’t a thing, however, Hollywood was quick to assist in the romanticization of the blue jean in the 1920s and 1930s.From

From then onwards, the classic Levi’s jeans had some serious competition. In the 1980s, Brooke Shields’s flirtatious Calvin Klein campaign, followed by Claudia Schiffer’s sensual ads for Guess turned almost every woman into a denim fanatic overnight. Later on, giant fashion houses like Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Dior joined the fun. It was then that Blue Bell (later known as Wrangler) in 1904 and Lee Mercantile in 1911 were on their way to become the most prominent denim brands for women and men to this day.
Are Jean Jackets in Style In 2021?
Denim jackets for women are once again flooding all our favourite e-retails, because, let’s be honest, they will never be out of style. These classic pieces tend to come time and time again. From summer-to-fall transition dressing to fantastic layering pieces for winter, they are a happy medium between casual and edgy. This season is all about 70s inspired denim in dark blue or black. The best part? It’s all about laid-back, comfortable styles. Think dark-wash denim jackets, cut-outs, oversized cropped, and more.
Honestly, can you think of a more versatile outwear piece? We are talking about year-round wearability, so there’s really no wrong time to invest in one. Plus, there’s a slew of affordable denim jackets for every season and occasion. Are you a fan of 70’s inspired embroidery? Maybe looking for a cropped trucker, a dark acid-wash, or a classic light-coloured option? I have you covered!
Demin Jackets to Wear with Dresses
We are slowly but surely walking into the cold-weather season, but that doesn’t mean that we must ditch our dresses just yet. Denim jackets are a fool-proof way of keeping yourself warm during the afternoons and evenings while looking hella cute in your fall-appropriate dress ensemble. The styling possibilities are seemingly endless.
If you are a fan of maxi dresses, opt for an oversized cropped denim jacket to make you look taller. When it comes to styling maxi dresses with jean jackets, medium, and long versions often make us look shorter and bulkier.
For midi and mini dresses, denim blazers offer an unexpected twist! If you are looking for a more “format” jean jacket style to match your attire, go for a white denim jacket with puff sleeves. Granted, the last two options have a more inventive take, however, it’s never too late to branch out and try new things, right?

These are some of my current favourite denim jackets for women that I think you will love, too!
How to Wear Denim Jackets with Hoodies
Who doesn’t love throwing on a comfy, cozy hoodie? The 2021 denim trends suggest pairing up your trusted hoodie with a denim duster and a fresh pair of slouchy jeans. Whether you prefer cropped or oversized hoodies, this option covers both.
This season is the perfect time to put your trust in the classics. And by that, I mean Levi’s Ex-Boyfriend denim trucker jacket. Although it looks fantastic with hoodies, it doubles as the perfect outwear for the office, with minis, maxis, shorts, and pants. Bonus point if you pair it up with a matching, Levi’s 501.
Look, I get it! Printed denim jackets for women are a daring option, but when it comes to monochromatic outfits, everything goes. Rock it with an all-white or a total black ensemble – hoodie included. Crisp!
Remember the Tie-Dye trend that tormented our time of isolation? It’s still here. If you own an oversized hoodie that looks suspiciously a lot like a dress, throw on a Tie-Dye Denim Jacket for the ultimate streetstyle-approved look.
Can Denim Jackets Be Worn in Winter?
While denim jackets for women are spring, summer, and fall-appropriate, we’ve seen them during the colder months many times before. How can I style my jean jacket in winter, I hear you ask? The answer is layering. There is no better feeling than throwing on a layered outfit to battle the low temperatures! Even the aforementioned cropped jacket is permitted.
Think of it like this: a buttery soft turtleneck is worn underneath a denim blazer, a quilted blazer of an oversized style. Now add an extra layer to it. Maybe a maxi, neutral-coloured coat, an ultra-warm fleece, or even a puffer jacket. Throw of a beanie or a jockey cap and you are ready to take the streets on a gloomy December morning.
Belted Denim Jackets are also a fantastic way to master the art of layering. Wear it on top of your sweaters and hoodies and add a lapel coat and a blanket scarf for extra warmth.
Keep up the retro vibes by layering your favourite turtleneck underneath a dark-coloured denim blazer. Opt for a pair of faux leather leggings or trousers. No matter your personal style, you will certainly find a slew of clever ways to be playful with your looks while keeping them warm and functional.
