If you’re looking to add a furry friend to your family, consider a cuddly dog. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own unique personality. Some are smart, others are full of energy, and some are just plain fun to be around. There are those who love to shower you with affection, others who prefer peace and quiet, and some who bring a little bit of chaos into your life! Just like us humans, dogs have their own quirks, so check out this list to find out which affectionate dog breeds might be perfect for your home. The big question is: which one will steal your heart?

Yorkshire Terriers—also called “yorkies”—are some of the most affectionate lap dogs around. Yorkie owners report that they seem content to simply be held all day. Plus, their long, lustrous fur is oh-so-soft and lovely to pet.

If you’re looking for a cuddly, loving dog that can also go on long walks and play fetch for hours, a Labrador retriever could be a great fit. Labs of all colors love lounging on the couch with you—with belly rubs, of course—but could also go for a jog in the park if you wanted!

Miniature or Toy Poodle

Described by one dog owner as “a teddy bear come to life,” a toy poodle is a great breed to pick if you want a happy lap dog who loves to heel as well. Their teddy bear haircuts make them look even cuter and more cuddly, so what you see is really what you get.

Pit bull mixes are common rescues because of the association with the breed and danger or violence. In reality, many pit mixes are cuddly and sweet—always wanting to be touched, held, or pet. If you like big dog cuddles, a pit bull mix may be for you.

A Havanese puppy looks something like an ewok from Star Wars, and these mini long-hair pups are just as loving as they look. This companion dog loves games, belly rubs, and long naps on your warm lap.

Even though Blue Heelers have a reputation for only “latching on” to one person, in actuality they are great family dogs who love to cuddle with whoever will give them attention. They’re working cattle dogs, but that doesn’t mean they won’t take a break to lay on their owners and receive many, many pets.

This may not be a surprise to anyone, but the little weenies of the dog world love cuddles and affection. Both the long hair and short hair varieties would be perfectly happy to sit on your lap all day and get scratched behind the ears until they fall asleep. Owners of Dachshunds often call them “Velcro dogs” for this reason.

Chihuahuas are the ideal pocket dog who would love to get cuddles all day if they could. Many chihuahua owners report that even if they’re not cuddling with you, they always want to be “touching” in some way—even if it’s just a paw on your lap.

It’s hard to go wrong with a golden no matter what your goals are for a dog. These loyal companions are satisfied to follow you around all day, waiting for hugs and affection.
