This list highlights the friendliest states according to Americans. While Midwestern politeness and Southern hospitality are well-known, it’s useful to know what to expect if you’re visiting a new destination or relocating for work. Review the following states and see how many you agree are the friendliest. Of course, opinions may vary, so feel free to share your own favorites.

Georgia has a well-known reputation of having some of the friendliest people in the United States. The Southern hospitality idea extends to the big cities, too. Some people have reported having Georgians pull over to help them with a flat tire within 10 minutes of the incident.

Massachusetts

Despite the “Masshole” moniker, people say the folks in Massachusetts are some of the kindest around, even if they’re not the “nicest” on paper. They might help a perfect stranger move a couch up a set of stairs and then tell them off for not hiring a moving company instead.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin enjoys a friendly reputation, like much of the Midwest, but there’s just something special about the folks in the cheese state! One Reddit user remarked upon the fact that people in Wisconsin are so friendly that they’ll “get in a fight over who gets to help you out.”

Michigan

Michiganders are so nice and friendly that even though the state had a large population of Klansmen in the 1920s, they couldn’t gain any traction in the upper peninsula because everyone there was too tight-knit to organize the hate group.

Texas

Texans are known to be so kind; they’d give you the shirt off their own back if you needed it. While it is part of the south, Texas has its own brand of niceness that just can’t be beat. While it is a large state filled with many different people with many different perspectives, they are united in that culture of kindness.

Tennessee

Tennessee’s the only 10 I see—in terms of friendliness, that is! Tennessee’s vast rolling hills, mountain areas, and country music towns are known for being highly friendly and inviting. Many say that Tennesseans are open, honest, and ready to learn from “outsiders.”

Vermont

Folks in Vermont have a reputation for being kind and friendly, but not overly gushing. They’re the type of folks who will always smile and wave as they pass by, but might not stop you and chat your ear off for ten minutes.

Oklahoma

“Okies” as they are known are just as agreeable as their nickname may imply. People from Oklahoma are kind, polite, and beyond friendly to anyone they meet—just ask anyone who’s ever been in business with them. So say “OK” to OK!

Missouri

Missouri, while sometimes a forgotten part of the Midwest, shares just as much of its kindness. Folks from Missouri are always eager to help, eager to listen, and are generally welcoming in all parts of the state.
