Salmon Fillet Foil Packets Ingredients

The salmon fillets themselves are the main ingredient in this recipe, and it’s flavoured with BBQ sauce, marmalade, honey, soy sauce, sugar, sesame seeds, orange, and green onions. For the veggie foil packets, you will need vegetables along with soy sauce, olive oil and garlic for flavouring.

You can vary the amount of sweetness by adjusting the amount of honey or sugar. Also, the brand of BBQ sauce makes a different since some kinds are much sweeter than others. In addition to all that, we all have our own preferences as to how sweet we like things. So use your own judgement about the sweetness.

How to Make Foil Packet Garlic Soy Vegetables

Carrots, zucchini, bell pepper, tomatoes, bell pepper, garlic, and onion combine to make the foil packet garlic soy vegetables side dish. It goes so well with this orange BBQ salmon. I also add soy sauce and oil to the veggie packets.

Now it’s totally up to you which vegetables you want to use here. You can use others such as broccoli, sugar snap peas, yellow squash, or even jalapenos for a spicy kick. Mushrooms would also be nice here.

Whichever vegetables you want to include in this 30 minute salmon meal are great but remember hard vegetables (like potatoes) have a longer cooking time than soft ones (like zucchini).

If you want to include those in the foil packets, just chop and parboil them for 10 minutes before adding them to the foil so everything cooks at the same rate.

Use decent quality aluminum foil for the foil packet garlic soy vegetables. Nothing is more annoying that cheap foil tearing and your veggies falling out!

Grilling Salmon Like a Pro

Once your orange BBQ salmon is brushed with sauce and your smoker is hot, you can cook it. Give the vegetable packets ten minutes before adding the salmon so everything is ready at once. The salmon goes directly on to the grill grate, skin side down. If you are using skinless salmon (which, be warned, can fall apart easily!) put the side where the skin would have been facing down.

Brush the salmon with the marinade as it cooks to keep infusing it with the tasty flavour. Add orange slices around the salmon during the final ten minutes of cooking time. Serve the orange BBQ salmon with the grilled veggies, cherry tomatoes, orange slices and some green onion slices.

This 30 minute salmon meal is so easy to make and it’s a perfect easy salmon on the grill dish to choose. It is easy to make on your grill or pellet grill like a Traeger smoker.

A good tip for this summer grilled salmon recipe is to leave the salmon alone on the grill. You don’t need to flip it (or the foil packets) like you would with a burger. (You don’t need to over-flip burgers either but that’s something for a different post!) So cook salmon and other fish without flipping it over, so it holds its shape. It will still cook evenly.

Salmon is delicate enough to break apart if you handle it too much. Remember the salmon is getting heat from all sides in the smoker so it’s cooked evenly in every part. If you were pan-frying it instead, the heat would only be coming from underneath so you would need a flip partway the cooking time. But when you make salmon foil packets you don’t need to.

Also, don’t overcook the fish. If it’s ready before the veggies are ready, just wrap it loosely in foil and it will stay moist and hot. As soon as it is opaque in the center and only just flakes, it’s done.

It doesn’t need to ‘flake easily’ like so many similar recipes suggest – knowing how to cook salmon is about the temperature in the middle.

It just needs to be at least 145 degrees F in the center to be perfectly cooked. Some recipes suggest 155 degrees F but honestly it’s perfectly cooked at 145 degrees F. You will love how quick this salmon cooks on your grill or pellet grill like a Traeger smoker.

What to Serve with Orange BBQ Salmon

This summer grilled salmon recipe is perfect as it is, but you will probably want to add something to the plate. Boiled rice with a little sesame oil stirred through would pair nicely here. Egg noodles prepared the same way would work too.

Prefer a cold side dish? Then how about some crusty bread and butter or even garlic bread (which you can make on the grill)?

This simplicity of this easy salmon on the grill is part of its appeal. But it’s a quick 30 minute salmon meal meaning it’s ideal for weeknights when you might not have a lot of time to prepare food after getting home.

Salmon Fillet Foil Packets FAQs

What type of salmon is best to use in this recipe?

I like using Pacific wild-caught salmon because it is especially rich in flavour and also a sustainable choice. The fish is brushed with a tasty homemade sauce. This includes BBQ sauce, marmalade, soy sauce, honey, sugar, pepper, and sesame seeds, all of which are bold flavours but go perfectly with the salmon. If you prefer another type of fish altogether, feel free to use that instead.

How do you store leftovers?

Leftovers will keep for up to 3 days in a covered container in the refrigerator. You could cook some egg noodles and toss the leftover salmon with those plus the leftover veggies too, for a different meal the following day, if you like.
