Either Shaoxing wine (if you can find it) or dry sherry, along with soy sauce or tamari, sesame oil, chillies, garlic, cornstarch, and salt go into the mix. And for the breading you need cornstarch, rice flour, salt, and pepper.

More about Asian Salt and Pepper Seasoning

If you like Chinese takeout, you’ll definitely know about Asian salt and pepper seasoning. And you might have wondered how these dishes get that distinctive flavour.

Recipes vary but this seasoning typically includes sea salt, white pepper, chilli flakes, ginger, sugar, garlic powder, and 5-spice. MSG also features heavily in many Chinese takeout (and eat-in) dishes, not only in pork nuggets.

This salt and pepper pork chop bites recipe is different because instead of using readymade Asian salt and pepper seasoning, you add the ingredients separately. It’s so tasty made with fresh chillies and garlic.

Making Chinese Takeout Style Dishes Gluten Free

The easiest way to enjoy Chinese food without the gluten is to make your own. Some soy sauce is naturally free from gluten but not all brands, so check the label. Tamari sauce tastes very similar and doesn’t have gluten.

Breading is typically made with wheat flour but you can swap the wheat flour for rice flour and cornstarch in many Chinese style recipes. If you’re gluten free yourself or you’ve been cooking for someone who is, you probably already know some ingredient substitutions.

Salt and Pepper Pork FAQs

Can you make this less spicy?

Since you’re in charge of the ingredients, you can absolutely hone the recipe to suit your own palate. While some people love the heat from the chillies, peppercorns and so on, others might prefer a slightly milder, or even much milder, result.

As long as you have salt and pepper in there, you have plenty of flavour, so feel free to adjust the amount of chillies as you prefer.

What’s the best way to store leftovers?

Leftovers will be fine for a few days in a sealed container in the refrigerator and can be heated back up in a pan. You’ll probably lose some of the crispness but all the flavour will be there.

What is good to serve with salt and pepper pork?

Classic Chinese sides include stir-fried vegetables, noodles or rice. Another idea is to serve this as an appetizer and then you could follow up with some other Eastern favourites, such as gluten free Kung Pao.
