Substitutions and Variations

Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free hot dog buns and ensure your sauces and hot dogs are gluten-free as well.
Another protein: Use pork, beef or even chicken hot dogs. You can even use vegetarian ones to make air fryer pizza dogs.
Different bread: Prefer sub rolls or hoagie rolls? You can use those instead. Just adjust the cooking time if need be.
Another cheese: Cheddar, an Italian blend, mozzarella, Swiss cheese – anything goes!
Softer buns: Skip toasting the buns or reduce the toasting time. Or increase the toasting time for perfectly crisp hot dogs.
Swap the sauces: Ketchup and mustard are hot dog classics, but feel free to use something else like BBQ sauce or chili sauce perhaps.

How to Store Pizza Dogs

Store: Pizza dogs are best served fresh but if you have leftovers keep them in an airtight container in the fridge and eat within a day or so.
Freeze: Assembled pizza dogs don’t freeze well.
Reheat: Air fry or microwave them until warm again.

Top Tips

Don’t cut the hot dog buns all the way through: Leave some bread in place so you can open them like you’d open a book.
Keep an eye on them: Different air fryer models have different cooking times, so keep an eye on these while they’re cooking.
Don’t forget the napkins! These pizza style hot dogs can be a bit messy to eat.

Pizza Hog Dogs FAQs

Can you cook more hot dogs at the same time?

This depends on how big your air fryer is. As long as you’re not overcrowding the air fryer basket (which would result in uneven cooking) you can cook as many will comfortably fit with space in between them.

What kind of tomato sauce is best in this recipe?

You can use plain tomato sauce, tomato and herb sauce or actually any pizza sauce you prefer. If you’re using regular tomato sauce you can also add a pinch of oregano or Italian seasoning.

Is this a kid friendly recipe?

Definitely! Did you ever meet a kid who’d turn down a hot dog or slice of pizza? They’re going to love this creative cross between the two!
