Strawberry Crumble or Crisp Ingredients
You need fresh strawberries, cornstarch, gluten free oats, gluten free flour, chopped walnuts, and coconut oil. Since there aren’t a lot of ingredients in here, make sure you’re using good quality ones.
Although you could use frozen or canned strawberries, I really do recommend using fresh. They’re just tastier. If you don’t necessarily need a gluten free strawberry crisp, regular oats and flour will be fine. Swap the coconut oil for butter if you prefer it. Chopped almonds would work in place of the walnuts, or you could buy a pack of chopped mixed nuts from the store.
Wait – where’s the sugar? Well since the strawberries are sweet by themselves you don’t have to add sugar to the filling or topping. The sweet strawberries contrast nicely with the topping. Perhaps you’re going to serve this with ice cream which of course is sweet too. If you do want to add some sugar (or your preferred sweetener) by all means go ahead.
What’s the Difference Between Crisp, Cobbler and Crumble?
A lot of people get this dessert made with fresh berries confused, and it’s easy to see why! Is this a strawberry crumble or crisp or cobbler? Aren’t they the same thing? Crisp, cobbler and crumble are all similar terms but not quite the same thing. These are the differences:
- Crisp: A fruit dessert usually topped with flour, oats, butter, sugar, and maybe nuts.
- Cobbler: A fruit dessert with a top piecrust or biscuit dough crust, but no bottom crust.
- Crumble: Similar to a crisp but made without the oats.
As you can see there are small differences although the fruit filling is typically the same with them all. Also there are regional variations. Some people call a crumble a crisp even with the oats for example. What matters though is that all three are delicious, especially this strawberry crisp baked dessert with fruit!
How to Make Gluten Free Strawberry Crisp
Since there are only six ingredients in this, you might expect this best gluten free crisp recipe to be easy. And you’d be right! Preheat the oven while you prepare the strawberries. Toss the berries with the cornstarch in a bowl then put them in a baking dish.
Combine the rest of the ingredients and sprinkle that on top to cover the strawberries. Now just cook this juicy dessert made with fresh berries for 25 minutes.
With a dessert this easy to make, you never need to buy anything readymade. You can literally prepare this in 15 minutes (or less!) and then just cook it in the oven. It’s so easy! This effortless gluten free strawberry crisp is well worth making. You’ll definitely want to make it more than once.
Some Variations You Might Like
A baked dessert with fruit recipe often has lots of room for variations. You can change the fruit mixture, the topping or both. Perhaps you have raspberries, blackberries or even apples to use up. You can use all kinds of fruit to make the best gluten free crisp recipe or mix different fruits.
If you’re using a hard fruit such as apples or not-quite-ripe pears the cooking time will change. If you want to ensure they come out soft (or at least soft-ish) increase the cooking time by 20 minutes or so. When making this dessert with fruit like apples or pears, toss them in lemon juice first for a great flavour.
Worried the topping might burn if you have a longer cooking time? Then cover the dish with foil for the first half of the cooking time. I bet making this gluten free strawberry crisp with half strawberries and half apples would be good.
How to Serve the Best Gluten Free Crisp Recipe
This gluten free strawberry crisp is great by itself but I like to add ice cream or whipped cream to it. That is completely up to you of course. Pretty much any dessert made with fresh berries can be served a la mode.
How Do You Reheat Strawberry Crisp?
You can serve a strawberry crumble or crisp warm or cold. To warm it back up, give it about 15 minutes at 350 degrees F. I like to warm it up in the microwave first then pop it in the oven to make sure the center is warm and the topping is crisped back up.
