Why My Dog is my Valentine
Ahh, the big day is here. Cupid’s birthday. Hallmark’s favorite holiday of the year. Singles Awareness Day. It goes by many names, but they all share the same date: February 14th. Valentine’s Day.
A day of the year that is easy to dread if you’re feeling down about not having a partner to do cutesy stuff with. Society and the media are obsessed with the idea of partnership, needing a boo to experience love and a fulfilling life, and how critical it is to have someone go all out for you on V-Day. And you know social media is going to be flooded with declarations of love and humble bragging about gifts.
First of all, if that concept has you down, I’ll have to stop you right there. Love for yourself is more than enough! You don’t need someone else to buy you gifts, to spoil you, to feed you well and make you feel comfortable. You have yourself, who knows you better than anyone. Who’s easier to be around than anyone. Who can do all that for you and more.
And if that speech doesn’t work on you, let me remind you of the second-best Valentine of all: your dog.
I Love my Dog Because …
Personally, Beau is a better partner to me than any human could be. And here’s just a few reasons why I love my dog and why my dog is my best Valentine. But this just isn’t about Beau as there are so many lovable dogs.
Always Down to Cuddle
Your dog will never say you’re too clingy or refuse to put down their game to snuggle up with you. In fact, any sort of physical affection is always up for grabs. Any time of day or night. No “you up” text required.

No need to hide your V-Day date this year, or defend their personality when you show the pics to your friends! Dogs stay cute with little to no effort, even on a bad day. Get them a cute collar – or don’t. They’ll be irresistible either way. Even if they don’t smell the best, no one’s got a cuter smile than your pup. Like no human date could even come close. Don’t even try. So whether you have a cute Corgi puppy or a mixed breed, puppers are a GOOD thing!
They Think You’re Cute, Too
No matter what. If you want to dress black-tie-ready with heels to the ceiling, they’re into it. If you want to wear your rattiest, pet hair covered sweats, they’re even more into it. You’re beautiful to them every day of the year, so let go of the pressure to show up and show out.
You Don’t Have to Spend a Long Time Getting Ready
Makeup is nonessential for this Valentine’s date. Shoot, you can skip a shower if you want to. They probably smell a little worse than you ever could anyways. Just make sure you’ve got those treats on you and ready to go. It’s the least you can do. One of the biggest reasons why I love my dog is because he loves me AS IS!
You Can’t Disappoint Them
So you couldn’t afford a fancy dinner at the high-rise. You didn’t buy the perfect bouquet of flowers. So what? Your dog will never be sad to see you show up, even if you show up empty-handed. Throw a few butt-scratches in there, and you’ll be on your way to the happiest date of your life.
They’re Down for Whatever
Oh, we’re gonna go to the dog park or run on the local trail? Cool. Oh, we’re going to bury ourselves in blankets on the couch and watch dog movies with crackers and cheese? Excellent. Literally, anything you plan, they’re happy to go along with. They won’t ever ask for more because when they’re with you, they’ve got the whole world in their paws.
They Never Complain
No grumbling about how cold it is outside on the way to wherever you’re going. There is no road-rage while you’re stuck in traffic. No comments about how your outfit doesn’t match theirs. Nope, the only complaining your little pup will do on your Valentine’s date is maybe to go out for a bathroom break or a little walk around the block. Other than that, it’s all positive vibes.
Snacks are a Must
They’re not going to give you any side-eye when you fill your bowl with an extra scoop of ice cream. Even better, you won’t have to compromise on what flavor to get! As long as there’s no chocolate, they fully and completely dig your choice. Because they think you’ve got great taste no matter what. Say you want to go all out on a charcuterie board, or play it lazy with a bag of chips. Say anything. It all goes.
But you Don’t Have to Share your Goodies
If you want to keep that whole takeout meal to yourself, you go ahead and do it. Though they might sit by and watch faithfully, your pup won’t feel entitled to a bite of whatever goodies you’re munching on.
The Best Kisses
No need to worry about chewing gum before the big moment. Their breath already reeks, so the pressure to be perfect is off! Plus, let’s be honest – puppy kisses are better than any other kind in the world. They might still shove their tongue down your throat, but at least it’s cute when they do it.
No Boring Conversation
You don’t have to pretend you’re interested while your date goes on and on about their favourite computer keyboard. No nodding along about the last football game. You don’t even have to ask them about their day. Your dog is totally willing to lie in complete silence with you.
No Gifts
This one seems like a negative, but wait! Yes, we love gifts. But no, we don’t like bad gifts. We don’t need a box of chalky heart-shaped candy. And we won’t have to pretend to like that corny card from the drugstore. Even better, the pressure to fake enthusiasm about a gift that makes you feel like your partner doesn’t know you at all. The best gift your dog can give you is their presence, and they’d love to give it up.
Heartbreak? Never Met Her!
Your dog isn’t going to leave you in a few weeks. And they’re not going to try to get with your friends either. You don’t have to worry about weird texts in their phones or wonder why they won’t answer. Your pup has unconditional, love-of-a-lifetime feelings for you and that’s never going to change.
Zero Confusion
Dogs are terrible at hiding how they feel about you. You’ll never have to ask twice. Humans? Not so much. Having a furry Valentine this year will allow you to skip out on all the guesswork, reading into behaviour, and wondering where you stand.
Straight to Bed
There’s no judgment involved if you hop right into bed with your Valentine. In fact, they’ve probably been waiting their whole lives for you to ask. Those pillows have their name written all over them…sometimes literally. Just another reason why I love my dog.
I Love my Dog, Beau!
