Lots of folks are really into couples’ costumes. Which makes sense. You have so many options when your costume is a two-part! Puns, famous characters, or even a chance to live out your favorite love story. Lots of people like to do them with their perfect match year after year.

And I’m no different. Well, I’m a little different. That’s why my best friend Beau and I are going to absolutely crush the Halloween costume game this year with these dog and owner Halloween costume ideas. 1. Mario & Princess Daisy

Every day with Beau got me saying “Yes! I’m the winner!” But today, I get to do it in costume. This pairing feels so appropriate for how in love we are with adventure – and each other. Catch my furry friend and I running around the block, jumping down some pipes, and crushing some Koopas. It’s-a me!

2. Cowgirl & Cowboy

Sometimes we all need a little break from the big city energy and apartment living. Sometimes, getting back to our roots and soaking up the joy of old traditions can energize and invigorate you. I know that’s how I feel when I set out on a new adventure. And I can guarantee Beau loves nothing more than to stretch his legs and run out some of that energy.

When you don’t have time for a foray into the country, dressing up is the next best thing. Since Beau is a natural working dog, playing the role of cowboy seems only fitting. And I love a straw hat moment. Yee haw!

3. Batgirl & Robin

Beau is my trusty sidekick every other day of the year, but on Halloween, we’re really going to play it up. Brittany Spaniels have a natural knack for hunting and normally Beau would be all over a bat flying nearby. Halloween is no exception – just with kisses instead! And believe me, those kisses are firm, just, powerful, and never give up, just like our favorite fictional characters.

7. BB8 & R2D2

Ya’ll know me – I’m a happy person. So dressing up as BB8 feels like the perfect addition to my normal resume of cuteness, chirping, and whistling. Just a little bit more round on Halloween!

Beau, as he always does, balances me out with his wisdom, good judgment, and leadership. Plus, he’s so much more graceful than I am when he moves, so I let him be the more sophisticated Star Wars robot. Together, we’ve got this whole Force thing down! I’ll always say Star Wars characters are a great choice for Halloween. I think Darth Vader and Princess Leia should be on our costume idea list for next year.

8. Star Trek

Beau and I, we transcend space and time. Two travelers in the darkness, finding our way across galaxies, with only one pledge: to live long and prosper.

This is a really fun way to embrace your inner nerd. We love how many ways there are to shake up this costume, because there’s so many versions of Star Trek! Keep it vintage or go new-school. If you’re feeling extra dedicated, we’d love to see your Borg face make up. A Star Trek costume is always a solid choice, especially when your dog gets to join the crew.

9. Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum

Okay, so we’re not exactly identical twins, but it sure is a cute idea to pretend to be! Catch us walking around talking (or barking) in rhymes, playing practical jokes, and being the happy little freaks that we are. Plus, how could we pass up an opportunity for a propeller hat? This might possibly be our cutest Halloween look ever!

10. Alice in Wonderland & Mad Hatter

It wouldn’t be the first time Beau and I have shared a little side-eye and agreed that we’re all a little mad here. However, it’s the first time in a long time that we did it in costume! It’s so fun to take on the craziness of the world with Beau as my guide, per usual – he’s just that type of dog. This time, we just happen to have the perfect outfits to go with our madness. This is still one of my favorite costumes we’ve done together.

11. Beanie Babies

Nineties kids unite! This idea is great because it’s easy to do and full of major throwback energy, which is always fun for Halloween. Beau loves his stuffed toys, so naturally, he’s thrilled to become one of them! Don’t get any funny ideas, though – no matter how cute and collectable our pet costumes are, we are NOT for sale!

12. Grease!

Retro never goes out of style, and naturally we had a blast time-travelling back to the fifties with this cute costume! I love the cute femininity of this one and Beau loved pretending to be a tough guy for a day. I don’t want it to get to his head, but he sure did a great job as we bee-bopped around in this funky get-up.

13. Nerds

I’m not saying that I’m smarter when I wear this costume – but it helps! And Beau, being the brainy pup that is he, really leans into this one as well. Sometimes a little too hard. Stop chewing up my pocket protector.

I love how easy this one is to throw together on the fly without spending a lot of money. We just put our two minds together, maybe hit up the thrift store, and like any great adventure we go on, we come up with some great ideas and great energy.

14. Box and UPS Delivery Guy

Wanna do something a little more outside-the-box this year? I don’t. Instead, I’m going inside the box – and Beau is going to be my keeper. Usually, Beau is the best gift I’ve ever received, but with this easy DIY halloween costume, we’re reversing the roles. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always got a cardboard box laying around – usually one that arrived on my doorstep recently, usually full of goodies.

What can I say? I just love the idea of embodying the joy you feel when a package shows up!

This is one of the best pet costumes, simply because large dogs, small dogs, and anything in between all look good in brown. Just like always, Beau will be hard at work by my side, making sure I get safely to where I belong. This might be the perfect Halloween costume for my hardworking boy!

15. Surfer and Shark

Time to let my fur baby have his ferocious moment! Beau has always been all bark and no bite – and with this funny dog Halloween costume, that’s all about to change. He looks so tough. Just imagining him with double the teeth in his mouth cracks me up.

I’m a sucker for an easy DIY, and as far as human costumes, this is as easy as it comes. Strap yourself into your favorite bikini, or maybe some board shorts if you’re feeling official, and get ready to hang loose like never before. One thing is guaranteed – wherever you go, this shark costume is sure to make a splash.

16. Fisherman and Fish

This costume is a great way to reel in the compliments at Halloween parties, if that’s what you’re into. No matter what type of dog you’ve got, they’re definitely a catch – so they’ll look great as your scaly little buddy, attached by a leash that looks suspiciously like fishing line. Hooks are optional and discouraged, though. It’s also a surprisingly easy costume to put together.

Another bonus: if you’re a fisherman, you finally have the opportunity to wear waders to a Halloween party. When you’ve got waterproof boots that go up to your chest, it doesn’t matter what’s going on around you. Spill a drink! Drop buffalo chicken dip! Your costume is a little different, but it’s up for the challenge.  Hook, line, and sinker.

17. Dorothy from Wizard of Oz and the Lion

Okay, before you even say it, I know what you’re going to say: how could Beau possibly be the Lion when he’s such a courageous pup? He’s nothing like that cowardly lion.  And to that, I say: look at his gorgeous lion’s mane of a fur coat. How could he not be the Lion?

There’s no better pup to guide me on my journey through life. He’s doing a great job of that already. So this Halloween night will be no exception. I’ll have my cute little braids, my cute little basket, and hopefully he’ll get along with Toto okay. He’s usually pretty good about that stuff!

18. Umbrella Rain and Rainbow

If this isn’t the most symbolic, adorable Halloween costume then I don’t know what is. Just think: your pup is by your side, through whatever weather. They stick with you through every storm life throws at you. And in the same way, you are your dog’s protector. They can always stand under your umbrella. Ugh, I love a good camaraderie. And I love dogs.

That’s what makes this couples costume one of the most iconic pairs. It’s so meaningful, and yet, so gosh-darn fun. I love a costume that is just as bright as the light in my perfect pup’s eyes. He really is the best part of everything.

19. Thing 1 and Thing 2

Okay, speaking of iconic pairs, what about these guys from Dr. Seuss? Blue hair? Mischief? It’s the perfect mixture of fun for Halloween night.  Beau was kinda quiet about it, but I know we had a good laugh looking at each other. We might even be naughty enough to rig a costume contest – not that we need to. If only we had a cat, too – this would be a great option to flex on those family costumes.

Don’t worry, we won’t go too crazy. No TP’ing houses, or smashing pumpkins. But if your friend’s goldfish goes missing, it’s a good idea to try to keep your mouth shut. Because we definitely didn’t do it.

20. Little Red Riding Hood & Wolf

It doesn’t get any cuter than this DIY Little Red Riding hood costume for me and a wolf costume for the dogs. Little Red is off to grandma’s house and I am not sure if these wolves are scary or not. They are kind of too cute to spook if you ask me! This one works especially well when you have multiple dogs to include, and my dad even got in on the theme with us. It would also be a fun choice for a couple dressing up with their dog.

21. Winnie the Pooh Bear, Eeyore and Piglet

Look out because there is a new gang in town! Winnie the Pooh and his pals Eeyore and Piglet make such a cute group costume, and these outfits are surprisingly easy to pull together. There are plenty of other characters to choose from too, so you can easily get the whole family involved. With other characters, the whole family can join in on this costume idea!

22. Mother Nature and Wild Beasts

Don’t forget the thrift store costume ideas! I couldn’t pass by this sparkly green dress and immediately knew that it was going to make the perfect Mother Nature Halloween costume. The pups joined in on the fun with some easy to wear moose and goat hats that they didn’t mind wearing at all. I love how this one came together, especially photographed out in the forest. The dogs look more cute than scary in their wild beast costumes, which is exactly how I like it!

Scooby-Doo is such a fun theme when you want to get your partner and the dogs involved. We went with Velma and Shaggy for the humans and let the pups take on the most important role: Scooby! With your matching outfits, you’ll be sure to solve some spooky mysteries and have a howling good time this Halloween!

26. Unicorns

Why stop at one unicorn when you can have a whole herd? I went all in on this one with three dogs joining me in their unicorn hats, and I love how ridiculously cute we all look together. A unicorn onesie makes the human side incredibly easy, while the dogs only need a simple accessory to make the whole theme work.

Tips for Choosing a Dog Halloween Costume

After dressing up with my dogs for so many Halloweens, I’ve learned that the best costumes are the ones that are fun for you and comfortable for your pup. You can go all out with a coordinated theme or keep your dog’s part incredibly simple. Either way, a few things can make dressing up and getting those cute photos much easier.

Keep your dog comfortable: A great photo isn’t worth making your pup unhappy. Make sure they can move, see and hear normally, and skip anything that seems to bother them.
Keep their costume simple: Your dog doesn’t necessarily need a head-to-toe outfit. A cape, bandana, hat or other small accessory can be enough to make a dog and owner costume work.
Choose a recognizable pairing: Movie characters, storybook duos and familiar costumes are especially fun because people immediately understand the theme.
Try everything on beforehand: Don’t wait until Halloween night to discover that a costume doesn’t fit or your dog wants absolutely nothing to do with it. A quick trial run gives you time to make adjustments.
Have treats ready: Treats are very helpful when you’re trying to get everyone looking in the same direction for a photo. Keep photo sessions short and give your dog plenty of breaks.
Work with your dog’s personality: Some dogs happily wear a full costume, while others would much rather stick with one easy accessory. You know your pup best, so build your idea around what they’ll actually enjoy wearing.
