Bake the tater tots: Spread frozen tater tots on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake until golden brown and crispy.
Add the cheese and melt it: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top and melt under a broiler.
Add the toppings: Add dollops of guacamole, sour cream and nacho cheese on top and then add diced tomatoes, bacon, green onions, and jalapeno slices.
Substitutions and Variations
Frozen tater tots: You can swap these with homemade tater tots or hash browns for a similar crispy base.
Shredded cheese: If you prefer, try using mozzarella cheese, Monterey Jack or a Mexican blend for a milder flavor than the cheddar.
Guacamole: Avocado slices make a quick and easy replacement here.
Sour cream: Greek yogurt works well if you’re looking for a lighter option.
Nacho cheese sauce: Melted Velveeta or a homemade cheese sauce can be used as a substitute.
Tomatoes: Diced bell peppers provide a crunchy, colorful alternative.
Crispy bacon: Turkey bacon or crumbled sausage is a great substitute.
Green onions: Chopped fresh chives offer a milder flavor in place of green onions.
Jalapeno: If you prefer less heat, try using thinly sliced bell peppers or else you can simply omit this ingredient.
Add olives: Sliced black olives are good on a tacho recipe.
Meaty version: Make your loaded tachos heartier by adding more toppings. Try seasoned ground beef (drain off the excess grease before serving) or pulled pork or brisket as a topping as well as, or instead of, crumbled or chopped bacon. In fact, you can add all of your favorite toppings!
Serving Suggestions
Appetizers: Totchos are a great way to kick off a meal, so serve these up nice and hot as your appetizer!
Main course: Next up, how about some comfort food? Bacon cheeseburger meatloaf is so good or you might prefer chicken meatballs with garlicky green beans.
Desserts: Finish up with homemade vanilla fudge or chocolate caramel tart.
How to Store Loaded Tater Tots
Store: Totchos are best when eaten fresh. It is difficult to reheat the tater tots after adding on toppings without them becoming soggy, but leftover tachos can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days
Freeze: Don’t freeze them, otherwise they’ll thaw out soggy.
Reheat: You can warm them back up in the oven.
Top Tips
Watch the tater tots: Keep an eye on them during cooking – they need to be crispy not burned.
Don’t skip the parchment paper: You don’t want your delicious tachos sticking to the bacon sheet.
Offer more toppings on the side: Extra sauces and toppings can be offered on the side so people can add their own.
Serve right away: Letting these sit out makes them go soggy! So, only make as much as you’re going to eat and it’s best to serve them as soon as they’re ready.
Tatchos Loaded Tater Tots FAQs
Pretty much anything that works in a loaded baked potato should be good on tachos also. Try pulled pork or brisket, corn kernels, or ranch dressing.
Anything goes – Doritos are the classic choice or you could make loaded baked potatoes or hash browns.
