Why You’ll Love It

This DIY banana bread mix contains the measured dry ingredients for a moist chocolate chip walnut loaf. It can be kept for later or packaged as a gift.
Measured ahead of time: The dry ingredients are combined in advance, so there’s no measuring when the bread is made.
Protected and organized: The sealed inner bag protects the mix, and the attached tag keeps the baking directions with it.
Useful for keeping or sharing: Store the mix for later or package an extra one for someone who enjoys baking.

Banana Bread Mix in a Bag Materials and Ingredients
A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
Muslin drawstring bag: An 8 by 10-inch bag carries the sealed mix and recipe tag. Prewash the bag without fabric softener and dry it fully before applying the design.
Transfer paper: Cricut Printable Iron-On for Light Fabrics is made for inkjet printing on light fabric. Print the design without mirroring, peel it from its liner and cover it with the included pressing sheet during heat application.
Food-safe plastic bag: This protects the banana bread baking mix from moisture. Muslin alone won’t seal the dry ingredients.
Flour and sugars: All-purpose flour forms the base of the mix. Granulated sugar supplies sweetness, and brown sugar contributes moisture to the baked crumb.
Baking powder, baking soda and salt: The two leaveners help the loaf rise, and salt seasons the batter.
Walnuts and chocolate chips: Both are included in the chocolate chip banana bread mix, giving the finished loaf melted chocolate and small walnut pieces. Make sure you chop the walnuts quite small, so they’ll distribute easily in the banana bread.
Bananas, eggs and butter: These are added when the bread is baked, and the bananas provide most of the moisture and banana flavor.

Prepare the bag: Press the muslin flat and place parchment paper or a pressing cloth inside it.
Apply the design: Print and trim the mirrored artwork, iron it onto the bag and allow it to cool before peeling the backing.
Combine the mix: Whisk the finer dry ingredients together before folding in the walnuts and chocolate chips.
Package it: Seal the dry mix in the food-safe bag, place it in the muslin and attach the directions.
Add the label: Attach the label and then store somewhere cool and dry until you’re ready to bake or to gift.

Substitutions and Variations
Oil variation: Replace the melted butter with ½ cup vegetable oil or canola oil. I tried melted coconut oil too and found it gave the loaf a mild coconut taste, which I liked.
Glaze packet: Package ½ cup powdered sugar separately. Mix it with a tablespoon of water, adding another teaspoon at a time until the glaze is thin enough to drizzle.
Make muffins instead of a loaf: Fill lined muffin cups three-quarters full and bake at 350°F for 18 to 24 minutes. They’re done when a toothpick comes out clean.
Skip the nuts: Omit the walnuts if you need a nut free gift. Increase the chocolate chips to 1 cup.
Easier method: Use a stamped muslin bag instead of an iron transfer if you want a simpler method.

Serving Suggestions
With a hot drink: The prepared banana bread would be delicious with a cinnamon dolce latte or latte breve.
With a cold drink: Try a peach black tea lemonade or an iced brown sugar oatmilk espresso.
Give it as a gift: A banana bread gift is a great idea if you know someone who’s into baking. I always make extra because it’s convenient to grab when I spot some forgotten-about bananas on the counter starting to brown!

How to Store
Store: Store the dry mix in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months. Keep the dry mix sealed inside the inner bag. The muslin bag is for presentation, not protection.
Freeze: Banana bread mix isn’t suitable for freezing but you can freeze the finished banana bread loaf. Cool it completely, wrap tightly and freeze the whole loaf or individual slices for up to 3 months.
Thaw the banana bread: Leave it wrapped and thaw at room temperature.

Top Tips
Use a firm surface: A hard, level base helps the transfer bond evenly to the fabric and reduces loose areas around the edges.
Check the transfer: Look for lifted corners when peeling the backing and press those areas again with firm pressure.
Use fresh leaveners: Stale baking powder or baking soda can leave the loaf low and dense.
Chop the walnuts small: Large walnut pieces can pull at the crumb when the bread is cut.
Mix in stages: Whisk the flour, sugars, leaveners and salt before adding the walnuts and chocolate chips.

Yes. The supplied artwork is already mirrored, so print the file exactly as it appears.
I let the bag cool for about 10 minutes. After that, the backing peeled off easily.
The iron may not be hot enough or the pressing surface may be too soft. Move the bag to a hard surface and press the loose areas again.
Bake it at 350°F for 55 to 65 minutes. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.
