A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
Bisquick: The basis of this recipe. You need the “original pancake and baking mix” Bisquick.
Garlic powder: For flavor in the garlic biscuits and also in the (optional but tasty and recommended!) garlic butter.
Cheddar cheese: So good in these biscuits – use mild cheddar, sharp cheddar or even extra-sharp cheddar.
Milk: To achieve the perfect dough consistency.
Melted butter: Melted butter with garlic is drizzled over the biscuits after baking to make them extra-delicious.

Prepare the biscuit dough: Whisk the Bisquick with the garlic and milk, then add the shredded cheese and mix again. Scoop the biscuit batter into balls and arrange on a parchment paper lined prepared baking sheet.
Bake the biscuits: Bake in a preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Make and add the garlic butter: Combine melted butter and garlic powder and brush this butter mixture over the biscuits while still warm. Serve the biscuits hot, warm or cold.
Substitutions and Variations
Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free Bisquick.
Salted butter: If you only have unsalted butter, use that along with a small pinch of salt to make the garlic butter for these Bisquick drop biscuits.
Cheddar cheese: I used mild cheddar for this recipe. You can use sharp or white cheddar if preferred.
Make it herby: Add some herbs into the batter, perhaps Italian seasoning, parsley, oregano, or dill.
Make it spicy: Add some chili powder, cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
Kid-friendly option: Add colby jack and bacon bits to your garlic cheese biscuits.
Deluxe version: Include chopped onions and minced basil. Smoked gouda cheese is also good in these.
Serving Suggestions
With brunch: Serve your bacon, frittata and breakfast fries, or lemon blueberry sweet rolls, with Bisquick cheddar biscuits.
With dinner: Pair warm biscuits with hamburger steak and gravy or beef chili.
As a snack: Enjoy bay biscuits with Bisquick as a snack with coffee or tea.
How to Store Homemade Cheddar Biscuits
Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat within 3 days.
Freeze: You can freeze these in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
Thaw: Defrost the Bisquick biscuits in the refrigerator overnight.
Reheat: You can serve these cold or warm them in an air fryer at 300°F for 2 or 3 minutes or in a warm oven for about 5 minutes.
Top Tips
Mixing the dough: Mix until the dough is crumbly before you add in the cheese.
Perfectly cooked: The biscuits are done when they’re a light golden brown on top. In my oven they took 10 minutes exactly. They might take anywhere from 9 to 11 in yours, so keep an eye on them in there.
Garlic butter: If you don’t want to make garlic butter sauce, it’s optional but really good. It’s best to pour it over the biscuits when you take them out of the oven so it can soak into the biscuits.
Easy Bisquick Cheddar Biscuits FAQs
I use a Danish dough whisk to mix all the ingredients together until a soft dough forms. And then I use my hands to mix in the cheese. It’s easier to incorporate the cheese more evenly throughout the dough this way. If you prefer not to use your hands, you can add the cheese with the Bisquick mix before you add the milk.
Do you love the cheddar bay biscuits at Red Lobster? These are very similar. You can sprinkle chopped parsley on top when adding the garlic butter too, to make them even more similar to Red Lobster biscuits.
