You will need Pillsbury crescent roll dough, some cheese sticks and some mini pretzel sticks for this crescent roll hack. This recipe serves 8 but you can double or triple it easily enough if you have a lot of guests over or you’re catering a party.

How to Make Cheese Stuffed Pumpkin Shaped Bites

Once you have gathered the ingredients for these mozzarella stuffed biscuit bites, you are all set to go! Cut each cheese stick into 4 pieces and shape the crescent roll dough into balls. Flatten each dough ball and put a piece of cheese in the middle, then fold the dough around the cheese.

Now wrap some twine around each one to make indentations. Repeat with the rest of the dough and cheese. You can then bake them on a parchment paper lined baking tray until golden. When they are cool, insert a pretzel stick into each one. That’s it – all done!

A Few Handy Tips

When adding the twine to your cheese stuffed pumpkin shaped bites, it’s best to keep it loose. Make it too tight and it will be hard to get off without tearing the rolls. The twine on these mozzarella stuffed biscuit bites is to made lines so the dough looks like a pumpkin in shape. You aren’t actually securing anything, so don’t over-tighten the string.

With the cheese, you only need to add a little to the centre of each dough ball. If you use too much or don’t completely enclose it in dough, the cheese can leak. Although this wouldn’t affect the flavour of this pumpkin shaped cheese appetizer, it would look a bit messy.

Press a little fresh cilantro or parsley leaf into each one when inserting the pretzel stick. This will look like a leaf on the pumpkin.

Crescent Roll Hack Variations

This snack for Thanksgiving or Halloween can be tweaked if you want. You can use frozen dinner rolls which rise instead of the crescent roll dough. At a pinch, you could use biscuit dough but the texture will be less smooth.

I used mozzarella cheese sticks because it melts really well but if you prefer another kind of cheese, any type can be wrapped in Pillsbury crescent roll dough.

What about sharp cheddar? I bet that would be really good too. Or you could use a blend of cheeses. You don’t have to use cheese sticks either, as long as you add the right amount.

Pretzel bites make cute little ‘pumpkin stems’ on this pumpkin shaped cheese appetizer. You can use sisal twine instead or even a strip of raw carrot or green bell pepper.

If you want to add something extra to your pumpkin shaped bread snacks, consider some cooked bacon, ham or pepperoni pressed into the cheese in the middle.

A strip of jalapeño or green onion would work too or even a strip of sun-dried tomato. Why not get creative and have fun? These are always fun and easy to make!

Cheese Stuffed Pumpkin Shaped Bites – Crescent Roll Hack

These 3-ingredient cheese stuffed pumpkin shaped bites are easy to make. They are a great snack for Thanksgiving or Halloween. This pumpkin shaped cheese appetizer wrapped in Pillsbury crescent roll dough is a crescent roll hack you need to try!
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 9 minutes
Total Time: 29 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 1 Can Crescent Rolls , Pillsbury
  • 2 cheese sticks, mozzarella
  • 4 pretzel sticks, mini

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and line the baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Slice each cheese stick into 4 equal parts.
  • Separate the crescent rolls and form them into balls.
  • From the ball form, flatten them out and add a piece of cheese to the middle. Form the ball around the cheese.
  • Take about 10 to 12 inches of twine, starting at the top and wrap it around the middle towards the bottom. Once you reach the bottom, cross the twine and go another direction, wrapping it back up towards the top. Twist it at the top and go back down, etc. Do this 3 to 4 times (no more than 4). Tie it off when finished. Repeat with all pumpkins.
  • Place the pumpkins on the baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
  • Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before gently using the scissors to remove the twine from the rolls.
  • Break the pretzels in half and put one in the top of each pumpkin, broken side down.

Notes

Do not wrap the pumpkins too tight or it will be difficult to get the twine off the rolls and it will potentially rip the rolls. If it rips slightly, that’s ok as it doesn’t make it look bad afterwards.
Do not make the cheese chunks too large or it will make it difficult to wrap the pumpkins evenly.
Be sure there’s no hole where the cheese can poke through on the bottoms or sides. The cheese will melt and push through this hole and not stay inside where you want it.
I have not tried this with biscuits as they normally cook up a bit less smoothly than crescent rolls, but it wouldn’t hurt to try. Frozen, rising dinner rolls are a good substitute for crescent rolls as well.
