Assemble the chocolate acorns: Melt some chocolate chips and then add some to the flat side of each cookie. Press a Hershey’s kiss on to each one and chill on a baking sheet to set.
Add the chocolate chips: Add melted chocolate on to each chocolate acorn and press on a chocolate chip. Chill some more so the chocolate acorns set, and then serve.
Substitutions and Variations
Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free cookies (these work great) and chocolates.
Another chocolate: Milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips or candy melts are all good. You could even use chocolate frosting instead of a little melted chocolate to attach the wafers to the Hershey’s kisses.
Another cookie: Swap the Nilla wafer cookies for mini Nutter Butters if you like. I love Nutter Butter bites but a vanilla wafer is just as delicious so take your pick or made some of each.
Alternative for the stems: You can use broken pretzel sticks instead of chocolate chips.
Serving Suggestions
More sweet treats: Pair these Hershey’s kiss acorns with pumpkin s’mores cookies, mint chocolate puppy chow or mini apple cheesecakes.
Savory bites: A Thanksgiving charcuterie board or smoked beef jerky make nice snacks.
As a decoration: Another way to serve chocolate acorns is to use them as a topping for a cake, cheesecake or another dessert.
How to Store Hershey Kiss Acorns
Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container on the countertop for up to 5 days.
Freeze: Don’t freeze these because the cookies will go mushy.
Top Tips
Time to set: Give the chocolate acorns time to set before moving on to each step.
Hot kitchen? If it’s warm in the kitchen, keep these refrigerated so they don’t melt.
Stir the chocolate chips: It’s important to stir the chocolate chips every 30 seconds or so, otherwise they will scorch in places and not melt evenly.
Sweet Acorn Snacks FAQs
I like to use a small spoon or skewer to add a dab of melted chocolate and then press firmly.
No, you can substitute butterscotch chips or peanut butter chips if you prefer. Melted peanut butter chips add a great nutty flavor to the chocolate acorns.
This can happen with boxed wafers if they get thrown around during transit. I like to buy an extra box and then just choose the best mini vanilla wafers to make these chocolate kiss acorns.
Chocolate Acorn Recipe
Chocolate Acorns
Ingredients
- ¾ Cup mini semisweet chocolate chips
- 40 mini Nilla wafer cookies
- 40 milk chocolate Hershey kisses, unwrapped
Instructions
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Set aside ¼ cup of the chocolate chips. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the rest of the chocolate chips in 30-second increments, stirring each time so it melts evenly.
- Arrange the Nilla wafers upside down and put some melted chocolate in the middle of the flat side of each cookie.
- Press a Hershey’s kiss bottom side down on to each Nilla wafer. The melted chocolate helps it stick.
- Repeat with the rest of the Hershey’s kisses and Nilla wafers. Refrigerate for 10 minutes and them leave them to set completely.
- Reheat the leftover melted chocolate chips and use a skewer to dab melted chocolate onto each Nilla wafer cookie.
- Press a chocolate chip flat side down onto it to create the acorn stem. Repeat with the rest of the acorns and chocolate chips.
- Refrigerate for another 5 minutes so the chocolate can harden and the stems set.
