Knowing how to make apple fritters means you can forget having to trek to the grocery store or bakery. Instead, you can rustle up with easy apple fritter recipe at home yourself. My dad loves old fashioned fritters, so I make them often.

Ingredients for Old Fashioned Fritters
Flour, sugar, baking powder, eggs, salt, milk, and baking powder combine with some oil and diced apples. Granny Smiths work well or you could sub Honeycrisp for a slightly sweeter taste.
I also like to add a pinch of dried cinnamon for flavour. Apples and cinnamon are a match made in heaven, after all!
If you prefer the slightly different flavour of brown sugar then you could use that rather than white sugar. The glaze for these homemade apple cinnamon fritters is a combination of powdered sugar (also known as confectioner’s sugar or icing sugar), vanilla and milk.
How to Make the Best Fried Apple Fritters
Mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder in one bowl, and the eggs and milk in another. Now combine both mixtures and then stir in the apple.
Heat the oil to 375 degrees F. This is easiest if you have a deep fat fryer so you can just set the temperature and know it’s hot enough when the light goes off. If you’re using a deep pan on the stove instead, use a candy thermometer. If the oil is too hot your homemade apple cinnamon fritters will burn outside and stay raw on the inside! Knowing how to make apple fritters which come out perfect includes knowing how to cook them of course.
Spoon the batter into the oil bit by bit for these fried apple donuts. You might like to press them down a little to make them flatter. When you see they are golden brown on one side, flip them over and brown the other side. I find with these old fashioned apple fritters, they will take 3 or 4 minutes in total.
Try to keep the temperature around 375 degrees F. Every time you add another spoonful of the batter the temperature will drop a little. The temperature will increase a little when you remove them.
Don’t add too many fritters to the pan at once and remove each one when golden all over. The glaze ingredients just need to be mixed together. If it seems too thick just add more milk, a tiny bit at a time. Finally either drizzle the glaze over the warm fritters or dunk them in it. Let them cool a little and then you can serve them.
Can I Bake Fritters Instead?
This particular old fashioned fritters recipe doesn’t really suit oven baking. You can make them in a deep fryer, heavy pot or Dutch oven. Frying ensures they come out crispy and perfect.
How to Store Homemade Apple Cinnamon Fritters
As you would think, these fried apple donuts are best served fresh. I love to bite into these little treats while they’re still warm! But if you do have leftovers, you can keep them in a brown paper bag or airtight container for a couple of days on the countertop or a week in the refrigerator. They can also be frozen for a couple of months.
Once you know how to make apple fritters I bet you’ll want to make them often. This is such an easy apple fritter recipe you will never need another. The homemade apple cinnamon fritters are just as delicious as what you’d find in the local bakery. Actually I prefer homemade old fashioned fritters to the bakery version.
Apple Fritter Variations
These are wonderful with apple but if you want to change the fruit, consider blueberries, pear or peaches. Try mixing and matching, for example use a cup of blueberries and a cup of apple. You can also swap the cinnamon for nutmeg or allspice. Ground ginger would also be amazing with any of these fruits or fruit combinations.

Homemade Apple Cinnamon Fritters Recipe
Homemade Apple Cinnamon Fritters – My Dad’s Favourite
Ingredients
- 1 Cup all purpose flour
- 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar
- 2 Tsp. baking powder
- 1 Tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 Tsp. salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 Cup milk
- 2 apples, Granny Smith, peeled, cored, diced into ¼ inch pieces
- 3-4 Cups canola oil
Glaze
- 1 1/2 Cup icing sugar
- 1 Tsp. vanilla extract
- 3 Tbsp. milk
Instructions
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Set this aside.
- In a separate small bowl, gently beat the eggs and milk together. Pour this into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. Stir in the apple pieces.
- Heat the oil in a large pot to 375 degrees F. (I cannot stress this enough – don’t overheat the oil or the fritters will fry SO quickly and the outside and leave the inside gooey and uncooked.)
- Drop the batter (try to flatten it out as you pour) by heaping spoonful into the hot oil. Depending on the thickness of your batter, you may want to flatten it out a little, so the fritter is not too thick. Allow to come to a golden brown (about 2 minutes) flip it and brown the other side. Do not crowd the pan.
- Remove each fritter as it is golden brown all over, to a plate lined with paper towels or a baking rack over a cookie sheet.
- Prepare the glaze by mixing together the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. You may want to add more or less milk than required to achieve your perfect consistency.
- Dip or drizzle glaze over each apple fritter then allow them to cool a bit.
