Why You’ll Love This

Easy: This DIY body scrub is simple to make. You just have to combine a few ingredients together.
Effective: Sugar scrubs can remove dead skin cells which can help with a youthful appearance and soft skin. Homemade body scrubs are just as effective as commercial ones.
All-natural ingredients: Take a look at the list of ingredients on a drugstore sugar scrub and you will see a variety of ingredients and chemicals that you might not recognize. The great thing about homemade scrub recipes is you only have to use natural ingredients, so it’s a healthier choice.

Orange Sugar Scrub Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below

Coconut oil: This oil is a solid at room temperature or when cold and it softens and melts if it gets warm. If you don’t want to use coconut oil, you can use olive oil or baby oil instead.
Sugar: Sugar scrubs are less drying than salt scrubs. You can use any kind of granulated sugar.
Sweet orange oil: This is a moisturizing ingredient and sweet orange oil smells lovely.
Sweet almond oil: This is another moisturizing ingredient. Sweet almond oil helps the sugar spread to avoid tearing the skin.
Orange mica powder: The fine particles of this substance help gently slough off dead skin cells and mica powder gives a sugar scrub recipe a velvety, luxurious texture. It also colors the scrub.

Substitutions and Variations

Strengthen the scent: If you want more of an orange smell, you can use extra sweet orange oil or even add orange zest to the mix.
Try another scent: Orange is an invigorating or refreshing oil. If you’re looking for more of a relaxing exfoliation experience, consider swapping some or all of the coconut oil for lavender baby oil and the orange mica for crushed dried lavender.
Add honey: Some people like to add honey to their homemade body scrub recipes because it helps with the consistency and it’s also very moisturizing for the skin. If you want to try, use the thickest honey you can find.
Tweak the consistency: Add more sugar if you want it coarser or more coconut oil if you want it smoother.

How to Use a Sugar Scrub

Prepare for a luxurious experience: Switch on the shower and consider adding a homemade shower steamer in the corner to release scents (this makes it more spa-like!)
Wet the skin: Wet the skin you want to exfoliate.
Apply the sugar body scrub:
Rub the scrub into your skin with your fingers, using a circular motion.
Rinse well: Rinse the sugar scrub away using warm water and enjoy your softer skin!

How to Store Orange Sugar Scrub

Store:  Keep body scrubs in an airtight container at room temperature. If you refrigerate this scrub, the coconut oil content will set, making it harder to scoop out of the jar. It should last about 6 weeks.

Top Tips

Don’t use scrubs too often: Use the sugar scrub once or twice a week. Using it daily can irritate the skin.
Don’t use on irritated skin: If you have very sensitive skin or you have sunburn, avoid using a sugar scrub.
Finish with a moisturizer: Once you have rinsed off the sugar scrub and patted yourself dry with a towel, apply body oil or body lotion to lock in the moisture.
Rinse the tub: Clean out the tub or shower after using the scrub, or else it might attract ants!

Orange Sugar Scrub FAQs

What kind of sugar is best for making this orange sugar scrub?

You can use any kind of granulated sugar. Keep in mind some are harsher than others. White sugar is the gentlest, raw or turbinado sugar is the harshest and brown and golden sugar falls somewhere in the middle.

Can you use it on your face?

If you plan to do this, make sure you’re using brown sugar which is quite gentle and not turbinado sugar or a coarse kind that can tear the skin. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best not to use a sugar scrub on it at all in case of irritation.

How does using sugar scrubs improve your skin?

A sugar scrub is abrasive enough to slough off dead skin cells, revealing the softer skin underneath. It can also stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a protein that can help keep skin looking youthful and fight wrinkles. Sugar scrubs can also boost circulation.
