Artichoke Dip Ingredients
This hot artichoke dip recipe is always a great snack and you don’t need many ingredients to prepare it. As well as the cream cheese you’ll need grated parmesan cheese and some mayonnaise, as well as quartered artichokes and some black pepper.
How to Make a Baked Artichoke Dip
Since this is a warm artichoke dip appetizer you will need to heat up the oven first. Gather all the simple ingredients and simply mix them together in an ovenproof dish.
In 25 or 30 minutes your easy artichoke dip recipe will be all ready to serve! If you want to get the top nice and crispy you could even give it an extra 5 minutes in the oven.
A lot of people buy jars of artichoke dip from the store but honestly it’s so quick and easy to make you’re better off making your own! The flavour is much better and fresher.
I typically don’t add salt until the end. Some brands of canned artichoke are higher in sodium than others so you might not even need any. I do like to grind in some black pepper though.
Some Serving Tips
If you’re feeding a crowd you might want to make extra dip. Offer various dippers such as crostini (baguette toast slices), crusty bread chunks (I like this crusty bread recipe), pita chips, tortilla chips, carrot sticks, bell pepper, corn chips, antipasto or a crudité platter (raw veggies). This is a family favorite and is a great addition to a charcuterie board.
Main dishes that would be tasty with this warm appetizer are Lipton onion soup meatloaf, American chop suey or sheet pan honey garlic pork chops.
It isn’t really a make-ahead dip because it’s best served hot (or at least still warm) from the oven. However, you can still make it ahead by using a crockpot instead of the oven. If you want to go the slow cooker route, then mix all the ingredients together in a small slow cooker and cook on Low for 2 hours. Give it a stir and then another hour cooking time.
After that you can serve it directly from the crockpot, still plugged in, so it stays warm even with the lid off. This is the best recipe with artichoke hearts for a party or any kind of gathering in fact.
How to Store Baked Artichoke Dip
There is no such thing as making too much of this easy appetizer dip recipe. Not only will it disappear very quickly but it also keeps well. You can refrigerate this cream cheese based appetizer for up to five days in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap.
What’s the History of Baked Artichoke Dip?
Are you curious how far back this recipe with artichoke hearts can be traced? Well actually it first became popular in the 1950s when people liked to snack as they watched TV. The recipe hasn’t changed much, although many of the early recipes included spinach. You can adapt this to a baked spinach artichoke dip by adding in fresh spinach or frozen spinach with the excess moisture squeezed out.
Maybe one of your parents or grandparents remembers when the recipe used to appear on the back of mayonnaise and sour cream containers, or when Lipton dry soup mixes carried the recipe on the packaging. This easy artichoke dip recipe has a lot of history!
A lot of these old recipes were developed by the companies selling mayo, sour cream and soup mix, to encourage people to buy them and try new recipes.
What Type of Artichokes to Use
This easy appetizer dip recipe is made with artichoke hearts. You can save time by using a jar or can and simply draining the liquid away to be left with the chunks of artichokes. If your local store sells both plain and marinated, you might as well use the plain kind for this dip, since you will be discarding the vinaigrette anyway.
The vinaigrette is made with vinegar and oil. If that’s all you can get, you can rinse the artichoke hearts off, else just go for the ones that are packed in water. Artichoke quarters will save you having to chop them up yourself to make this hot artichoke appetizer.
Hot Artichoke Appetizer Variations
This appetizer made with cream cheese is great as it is but you can always tweak it if you want! Throw in some baby spinach leaves or garlic powder. Lemon juice and fresh basil also work well although you don’t need much. You could lighted it up with Greek yogurt instead of the mayonnaise or try adding some kick with the addition of jalapeño pepper. It is a great recipe that is easy to personalize to your taste.
For a more fancy presentation you could hollow out a round loaf of bread and use that as the serving vessel for the dip. Sit the bread in a dish though, in case this recipe with artichoke hearts decides to leak through the bread!
I can think of so many occasions (parties, game day) when this baked artichoke dip would be perfect. If you want an easy appetizer made with cream cheese or a quick recipe with artichoke hearts, this baked artichoke dip will be perfect.
