Baked Artichoke Dip FAQs

What’s the history of this dip?

It dates back to the 1950s when people liked to snack as they watched TV. Maybe one of your parents or grandparents remembers when the recipe used to appear on the back of mayonnaise and sour cream containers, or when Lipton dry soup mixes carried the recipe on the packaging. A lot of these old recipes were marketing tactics by the companies selling mayo, sour cream and soup mix, to encourage people to buy them and try out new recipes.

What type of artichokes should I use?

You need artichoke hearts for this easy artichoke appetizer recipe. You can save time by using a jar or can and simply draining the liquid away to be left with the chunks of artichokes. If your local store sells both plain and marinated, you might as well use the plain kind for this dip, since you will be discarding the vinaigrette anyway. The vinaigrette is made with vinegar and oil. If that’s all you can get, you can rinse the artichoke hearts off, else just go for the ones that are packed in water. Choosing artichoke quarters will save you having to chop them up yourself.
