Personally, I never thought I was a pie person. I was a fan of chocolate pie, because well essentially it is just chocolate pudding with a crust. Can you blame me for loving it?
From your sweet grandma’s homemade pie to one of those over-the-top pies you are dying to try from Pinterest, there is a handmade pie for everyone to try! People love their pies so much, they place in competitions throughout the WORLD to see who reigns supreme in the pie game. I mean, they even have made a Pi(e) Day! Isn’t that wild! In fact, it is rather challenging to pick the best pie recipes.
Pi Day
Pie day, aka Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.
Technically speaking, March 14th is Pi Day and there is no better reason to eat a pie. Talk about math lovers and foodies uniting for the common good! Pull out the rolling pins and get baking to celebrate the mathematical constant π (pi). From a classic apple pie to a savoury pot pie, you will be on a pie baking spree. And you are likely to witness all of your friends hashtagging about it, too. With classics, such as apple pie and lemon meringue pie, and a few new twists, I am sure you will find a recipe that will become a new favourite.

Pie Crust
Pie crust isn’t as intimidating to make as you would think. My favourite recipe uses a food processor and takes just minutes to make. Once you get comfortable making pie crust, you can experiment with the countless varieties of pies, tarts and galettes.
Pie crust tips for success:
- Cold ingredients are essential in making a great pie crust
- Chill the dough for at least an hour before rolling it out
- Don’t overwork or over handle the dough
When in doubt, you can blend together graham crackers and a couple of tablespoons of melted butter to make a sweet, quick pie crust.
Did you know that…
- The first pie recipe was published by the Romans and was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie
- The early pies (pyes are they were back then) were predominately meat pies in order to keep people bulky and be able to sustain long working days
- Pumpkin pie was first introduced to the holiday table at the pilgrim’s second Thanksgiving in 1623
- Pie was not always America’s favorite dessert – in the 19th Century, fruit pies were a common breakfast food eaten before the start of a long day. And they still are traditionally eaten for breakfast in some parts of Europe!
- The wet bottom molasses pie, Shoo-fly pie, was used to attract flies from the kitchen
- Boston Cream Pie is a cake, not a pie (OMG right?)
- At one time, it was against the law to serve ice cream on cherry pie in Kansas
- When pie was first brought to America, they called the pans they cooked the pies in “coffins”
- English tradition credits Queen Elizabeth I with making the first cherry pie
