Substitutions and Variations
Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pretzels, cereal and candies.
Cereals: You can use any type of cereal you prefer, such as Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies or Lucky Charms.
Optional add-ins: One of the most fun things about this recipe is you can add pretty much whatever you want into the snack mix. Try popped popcorn, candy eggs, Easter sprinkles, granola clusters or pink and white mini marshmallows.
Pastel M&Ms: Substitute any kind of M&Ms, perhaps the peanut ones if they’re a favorite. Alternatively, any chocolate candies would work.
White candy melts: Use white chocolate chips, vanilla almond bark or homemade bark instead.
Pretzels: Use any kind of pretzels, such as pretzel sticks or pretzel twists.
Peanuts: Swap these for almonds, cashews, pecans, or pistachios.
Serving Suggestions
As a sweet snack: Enjoy bunny bait with a coconut cottontail margarita or lavender lemon drop martini on movie night.
For dessert: Serve up some adorable bunny bait after your Easter dinner of honey glazed ham, fondant potatoes and charred zucchini salad.
As a gift: Add some to a handmade personalized gift basket and give as a gift.
How to Store Easter Snack Mix
Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature and eat within 3 or 4 days. This snack mix lasts for up to a week but will lose its crispness.
Freeze: I wouldn’t freeze the snack mix because the crunchy ingredients would get soggy.
Top Tips
Mix the sprinkles and M&Ms last: Mix the nuts, pretzels and cereal together before adding the sprinkles or M&Ms, so the wafers can cool slightly and the color doesn’t melt off your M&Ms when adding them.
Give bunny bait as a gift: I like to break this bunny bait Easter snack mix into chunks and put them in little cellophane bags decorated with pastel-colored ribbons – they make a super-cute gift!
Wait for it to set: Although you’ll want to dive into this delicious snack mix right away, it takes up to half an hour to set (or you can pop it in the fridge to set faster!)
Easter Bunny Bait FAQs
I keep mine on the counter but you can refrigerate it if it’s especially hot in your kitchen.
This can happen if you don’t let it cool completely before storing, as the excess moisture in the storage container can get into the pretzels and cereal to make them less crispy.
