Old Fashioned Caramel Fudge Recipe Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Dulce de leche: This South American caramel sauce makes the most wonderful fudge (I used this one).
White chocolate chips: These pair so well with the caramel flavor.

Substitutions and Variations

Salted caramel fudge: Sprinkle some flaky sea salt over the caramel fudge before it sets to make salted caramel fudge.
Dark or milk chocolate: Swap the white chocolate chips for dark chocolate or milk chocolate for a slightly different result. If semi sweet chocolate chips are too sweet, use a rich dark chocolate instead for a less sweet outcome.

Serving Suggestions

As a sweet snack: Fudge is very rich so you’ll only want to serve a square. It goes well with an iced gingerbread latte, Starbucks pink drink or any other beverage you like.
For dessert:
Serve up a piece of fudge after dinner. Whether you’re making a cozy stew or beef tenderloin medallions with fondant potatoes, fudge always makes a great after-dinner treat.
To pair with other desserts:
A square of fudge pairs well with a fruit dessert for a lovely contrast.

How to Store Easy Caramel Fudge

Store: Keep caramel fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat within 2 weeks.
Freeze: You can freeze it in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
Thaw:
Defrost it in the refrigerator overnight or on the counter for a couple of hours.

Top Tips

Use Nestle chocolate chips: I always get a good outcome if I use Nestle white chocolate chips, so I’d recommend them.
Don’t get it too hot: Avoid heating the fudge mixture over 240°F. If you do, the milk and sugar will separate and your fudge will come out waxy and greasy. It will taste the same but not look as good.
Make extra: Salted caramel fudge makes a wonderful gift, so make a second batch!

Caramel Fudge Recipe FAQs

Why doesn’t my fudge have the right texture?

If it’s too hard, you used too much chocolate. If it’s too soft or gummy, you didn’t use enough chocolate.

What can I use in place of dulce de leche?

Another type of thick caramel sauce will work but don’t use anything with a high percentage of water because the fudge will come out watery.

Can I add vanilla to this sweetened condensed milk caramel fudge?

Add half a teaspoon of vanilla bean paste or a few drops of vanilla extract to add a vanilla touch. You could also try a different flavor of extract, perhaps hazelnut or almond for a nutty taste.
