Chocolate Banana Bark Ingredients
A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
Chocolate chips: I recommend using a good brand, such as Ghirardelli, for the best flavor (these are my favorite!)
Peanut butter: I used creamy peanut butter.
Bananas: Large, ripe bananas are perfect. If you’re using small bananas, you might need one extra.
Sea salt: Coarse sea salt or flaky sea salt works best.

Prepare the bananas: Arrange sliced bananas on a parchment paper lined baking sheet in a rectangle shape.
Add the peanut butter: Microwave the peanut butter and pour it over the banana slices, spreading it with a spatula.
Freeze the banana bark: Freeze it for half an hour.
Add the chocolate layer: Melt the chocolate chips and pour the melted chocolate over the banana and peanut butter layer, spreading it to the edges with a spatula. Sprinkle sea salt on top.
Freeze once more: Pop the baking sheet back in the freezer until the banana bark is hard, then break into pieces and store or serve.
Substitutions and Variations
Chocolate chips: Feel free to use your preferred type of chocolate, such as milk chocolate or white chocolate instead of the dark chocolate chips. You could also use a mixture of more than one kind.
Toppings: Instead of using sea salt, you can top the banana bark with chopped peanuts, shredded coconut, colorful sprinkles, or dried fruit.
Peanut butter: You can use natural peanut butter or creamy or crunchy – any type will work. Or you could substitute another nut butter like almond butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter.
Bananas: If you like the idea of this treat but you’re not really a fan of bananas, substitute another type of soft fruit such as plums, grapes, peach, or apricot. You could even use dried fruit.
Add a drizzle: Melt white chocolate or colored candy melts and drizzle over the chocolate-topped bark.
Cookies and cream banana bark: Substitute white chocolate for the dark chocolate and top with chocolate cookie crumbs.
Turtle banana bark: Add 2 tablespoons of caramel to the peanut butter and add toasted pecans on top.
Honey nut banana bark: Add 2 tablespoons of honey to the peanut butter and top with chopped toasted almonds or walnuts. Maple syrup would work in place of the honey.
Serving Suggestions
As a sweet treat: Enjoy banana bark with an iced lavender matcha latte or a Starbucks copycat pink drink.
For dessert: After a tasty meal of slow cooker Mongolian beef with hibachi noodles or cavatelli with arugula pesto, you’ll find a few pieces of banana bark really hit the spot!
As a gift: Add pieces of banana bark to a cellophane bag and secure it with a ribbon. You can also add a label with the storage directions.
How to Store Viral Chocolate Banana Bark
Store: Keep the banana bark in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat within a week.
Freeze: You can freeze it in an airtight container for up to 3 months and either let it soften in the refrigerator or enjoy it as a frozen treat.
Top Tips
Use good quality chocolate: The brand and quality of chocolate largely determines the outcome of the recipe. I used Ghirardelli and it came out really good.
Making the banana rectangle: You don’t have to arrange the banana rectangular shape perfectly. As long as all the slices are touching, it’s fine.
Keep the bark chilled: The bananas get dark and mushy if the bark is left out of the refrigerator for too long, so keep it refrigerated or frozen.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bark FAQs
You don’t have to, but you can add a little coconut oil to the chocolate chips if you like. This makes it extra-glossy. This is completely optional though.
You can use either one. Bananas become sweeter the more they ripen, so use extra-ripe ones if you prefer a sweeter taste.
Although you can always add some if you want, I find the natural sweetness of the bananas in this viral banana bark recipe enough for my taste.
