For more detailed instructions with weights and measurements, jump to the printable recipe card.
Prepare the bananas: Cut each banana in half, insert popsicle sticks into the flat end. Freeze them on a baking sheet for a couple of hours.
Melt the chocolate chips: Melt the chocolate and coconut oil and transfer the melted chocolate into a glass jar.
Coat each banana half: Dip the banana halves in the melted chocolate mixture, letting any excess chocolate drip off. Roll them in (or sprinkle them with) your preferred toppings.
Freeze them until set: Space the chocolate covered bananas halves out on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and freeze until set before serving.
Substitutions and Variations
Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, check your chocolate chips are gluten-free and choose gluten-free toppings.
Bananas: Not really a banana fan? Try mango, papaya, pineapple, or kiwi fruit instead.
Chocolate chips: Semisweet chocolate chips are good or you could use dark chocolate or even white chocolate for a different look and flavor.
Toppings: Anything goes – chopped nuts, shredded coconut, ice cream sauce, flaky sea salt, sprinkles – get creative with toppings!
Serving Suggestions
Appetizers: Begin your meal with Irish nachos.
Main dishes: Next up, enjoy sheet pan Mediterranean cod with a tomato burrata salad or perhaps crispy ginger beef with hibachi fried rice.
Dessert: Finish off with these frozen chocolate covered bananas, and maybe some banana chocolate chip cookies too!
How to Store Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas
Freeze: If you’re not serving them right away, place the dipped and fully set bananas into an airtight container or Ziploc freezer bag. Separate the layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Store chocolate covered bananas in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. They should be safe to eat beyond that but might develop ice crystals or a slightly different taste.
Top Tips
Choose the best bananas: Use ripe but firm bananas for the best balance of sweetness and firmness. Overly ripe bananas will be too soft and too-hard ones aren’t so tasty.
Thin the chocolate: If your melted chocolate seems too thick for dipping, stir in a little extra coconut oil (½ teaspoon at a time) to thin it out.
Work fast: Have your toppings ready to sprinkle immediately after dipping each banana. Once the chocolate sets on the frozen banana, it’s harder to get toppings to stick.
Chocolate Dipped Frozen Bananas FAQs
If you prefer melting the chocolate in a microwave to using a double boiler, do it in short 15 to 20 second bursts, stirring well between each interval so the chocolate doesn’t scorch.
I like to add coconut oil to the chocolate chips to “temper” the chocolate (this means it sets more shiny). You don’t have to use it but you might want to add a little coconut oil to thin the chocolate if it’s too thick.

Instructions
Prepare the Bananas:
- Peel the bananas and cut each one in half.

Thin the chocolate: If your melted chocolate seems too thick for dipping, stir in a little extra coconut oil (½ teaspoon at a time) to thin it out.
