Although everyone has their own travel preferences, it’s fair to say there are plenty of cities, countries and resorts that are hyped up but, in reality, are either underwhelming or downright disappointing. But we’ve all done it before – picked out a place that sounded incredible and then not had an enjoyable stay. Perhaps the crowds were unbearable, everything was twice as expensive as you’d imagined or you felt unsafe or hated how commercialized everything was. From inflated expectations to superficial experiences, here are 10 of the most overrated cities. How many have you visited?

Dubai

While known for its extravagant architecture and luxurious lifestyle, Dubai often falls short when it comes to authentic cultural experiences. Many of its attractions are deemed superficial and tailored primarily for tourists, lacking a genuine local flavor. Additionally, the extreme heat and high cost of living can make it a challenging city to truly enjoy for an extended period of time.
Miami

While Miami may be known for its glamorous beaches and vibrant nightlife, these popular assumptions overlook the less glamorous aspects such as traffic congestion, high crime rates, and inflated prices. So, if you are looking for a relaxing and affordable beach vacation, Miami should not be your first choice.
Nashville

Although renowned as the “Music City,” Nashville’s charm is somewhat diminished by the overwhelming crowds and commercialization of its music scene, which can dampen the authentic experience many visitors seek. Many past visitors suggest that if you are no longer a partier in your 20’s, you should steer clear of this drinking city.
Dublin

Despite its rich history and lively pub culture, Dublin can be seen as overrated due to the high influx of tourists, especially in popular areas like the Temple Bar. If you want a true Irish experience, you will need to drive an hour or two outside of the city.
Portland

While Portland is often hailed as a granola girl or hipster haven with a focus on sustainability and alternative culture, some find it to be dirty and unsafe. Additionally, the region’s frequent rain and cloudy weather can dampen the spirits of those seeking a sunnier and more outdoorsy environment.
Paris

Paris may be a dream destination for many, but the reality often includes long lines, crowded tourist sites, and (very) inflated prices, which can detract from the romanticized image portrayed in movies and books. Additionally, some visitors find the city’s infamous reputation for rudeness among locals to be a disappointment.
Las Vegas

It’s no secret that Las Vegas is known for its vibrant nightlife, endless entertainment, and flashy casinos, but the city can quickly become overwhelming and artificial. The constant hustle and bustle, along with the prevalence of excessive consumerism, may not appeal to those seeking a more genuine and relaxed destination. Be prepared to spend (eh lose) a pretty penny.
Waikiki

Waikiki’s iconic beaches and surf culture make it a popular choice for tourists, but the area’s overcrowded beaches (and streets), high-rise hotels, and commercialization can detract from the natural beauty and tranquility that visitors often seek in a Hawaiian getaway. It is said that even Hawaiians hate it.
Venice

While Venice’s picturesque canals and historic architecture are undeniably stunning, the city’s popularity among tourists has led to a seriously overcrowded and tourist-centric atmosphere. Be prepared to pay more inflated prices and wait in long lines that will surely detract from the charm and authenticity that once defined this unique destination.
Los Angeles

Similarly to Miami, LA is often associated with glitz and glamour. But, the magic will quickly diminish as you notice the dirty streets, the notorious traffic congestion, the sprawling urban layout, and stark socioeconomic disparities.
