Why Udon Noodles are So Good

Udon noodles are thick white noodles which have a chewy texture and work in many Japanese recipes such as this beef udon noodle stir fry. They’re made from wheat flour and are used in dishes where they are going to soak up bold-flavoured ingredients.

Udon are usually rounded but can also be flat. In Japan these noodles are often served in a basic dashi-type broth. When working with this type of noodle, always remember to rinse them after cooking. If you don’t, then the starchy film will make them gummy and stick them together.

Beef Yaki Udon FAQs

Can you use a different kind of noodle?

You could, but personally I love how the succulent beef pairs with the thick, chewy udon. These noodles are easy to find too. However if you do have another favourite, feel free to sub those in instead. I’d also recommend stocking up. There are just so many wonderful noodle dishes that take less than 30 minutes to make.

Do you have to use a wok to make beef yaki udon?

A good wok is always a worthwhile investment. I love how you can cook the veggies and then push them up the wok sides and cook the meat in there, then pull everything back together.

If you don’t have a wok or anything similar with sloping sides, you should remove the vegetables, cook the steak in there, then add them back in.

How long will leftovers be good?

If you have leftovers of this easy udon recipe, eat them within 3 days. They reheat well in the microwave.
