Morning coffee can be creamy, frothy and still taste like real coffee without adding creamer. Bulletproof coffee, also known as butter coffee or keto coffee, blends hot brewed coffee with butter or ghee and MCT oil for a rich latte-style sip. A quick blitz in the blender makes it silky and stable so the fat emulsifies into the drink instead of floating on top. Bulletproof coffee is fast to make, satisfying to sip and simple to customize. Enjoy it as a standalone breakfast or pair it with a light bite when you’re looking for steady energy levels.

Bulletproof Coffee Drink Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Brewed black coffee: Hot and robust base that keeps the drink bold. You can use bulletproof coffee beans, which are certified clean and toxin-free, or your preferred high quality beans.
Grass fed butter or grass fed ghee (clarified butter): Adds rich flavor and helps create a silky body. Grass fed dairy includes conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid often prized in a ketogenic diet or similar high fat diet. You can use unsalted butter or unsalted grass fed butter (or salted, if you prefer). Regular butter also works.
MCT oil: MCTs, or medium chain triglycerides are a rapid energy source, typically obtained from coconut oil and/or palm kernel oil, that blends smooth and stays creamy. A good source of healthy fats.

Substitutions and Variations

Coffee: Choose a medium or dark roast for a balanced base. (This ground bulletproof coffee is delicious!)
Butter or ghee: Butter tastes rich while ghee brings a toasted note. I’ve tried this with unsalted and salted butter. Grass-fed butter or ghee will provide the best flavor and nutrition. If using salted butter, you might like to add a pump or two of your favorite sugar-free coffee syrup to counter it (I like salted butter with sugar-free caramel syrup!)
Heavy whipping cream: If you want to get used to the flavor of bulletproof coffee more gradually, you can use half butter and half heavy whipping cream and then reduce the amount of cream in future cups.
MCT oil: Use a small amount if you’re new (or stay near a bathroom!) then adjust to taste.
Topping: Add a sprinkle of unsweetened cocoa powder or ground cinnamon or nutmeg on top.
Coffee syrup: Use sugar free syrup if following the keto diet or any syrup you want if not.
Sweeten it up: If sticking to a keto diet and want to make it sweeter, add stevia, monk fruit or erythritol.
Add collagen: Include a scoop of collagen for joint, hair, and skin health.

Serving Suggestions

With a savory breakfast: Try this hash brown breakfast casserole or some crispy bacon with breakfast potatoes.
With something sweet: Serve cheese Danishes, Bisquick banana muffins or a fried egg sandwich with your butter coffee.
As an energizing drink:
Enjoy your butter and MCT oil coffee by itself or pair with cranberry energy bites for slow-release extended energy.

How to Store Bulletproof Coffee

Store: Bulletproof coffee is best served immediately, but you can store it in a thermos for up to 2 hours. Reheat and re-blend before serving.
Freeze: I don’t recommend freezing bulletproof coffee, as it will separate.

Top Tips

Use hot, freshly brewed coffee: Heat helps the fats emulsify and stay frothy.
Vent the lid: Open the blender’s steam vent so pressure doesn’t build.
Start small with MCT: Begin with 1 teaspoon if you’re new, then increase. These high quality fats are believed beneficial, but you might experience some “gut issues” if you take too much too soon!
Warm the mug: A warm cup keeps the foam plush.
Blend long enough: Keep going until the drink turns pale and glossy.
No blender? You can use a handheld immersion blender or a small whisk. Pour the ingredients into a deep bowl or mug. Whisk or blend carefully until the coffee lightens in color and is creamy and frothy.

Bulletproof Coffee Drink FAQs

What is bulletproof coffee?

A tech entrepreneur named Dave Asprey created the idea for bulletproof coffee. Popular in the ketogenic diet world, Asprey developed the coffee to enhance mental clarity and boost energy. His original recipe uses coffee beans free from mold toxins, grass-fed butter or ghee for healthy fats and MCT oil, which is also called medium-chain triglycerides, that rapidly converts to ketones for sustained energy without blood sugar crashes.

Is this low carb bulletproof coffee actually creamy without adding cream?

Yes. Blending emulsifies the fats so the texture turns silky and frothy. If you drink coffee, you might find the different flavor takes a little getting used to, but most people who drink coffee seem to enjoy it.

Is this a healthy drink?

If you are wondering how bulletproof coffee may affect your health, it’s best to consult a medical professional or research the ingredients yourself first, to see whether this drink might or might not be a good fit for your diet.
