I used semisweet chocolate chips so you can use the same or you could sub them for white chocolate chips or another favourite. If you don’t have Reese’s mini peanut butter cups you could use the regular size ones and just cut them into pieces. It’s simpler with the mini variety but since you are using leftover Halloween treats, it just depends what you have!

What is the Baking Soda for?

You might be curious about using baking soda. When added to dough, this ingredient releases carbon dioxide to make the cookie soft and fluffy. Recipes containing something acidic like vinegar, citrus or sour cream typically call for this as a leavening agent.

Using baking soda means you should work quickly and bake the cookies as soon as you’ve combined the ingredients. Otherwise the cookies will lose the carbon dioxide and come out flat.

Can I Use Baking Powder Instead?

Baking soda tends to give a stronger raising reaction than baking powder. However, you can sub that instead. If you are using baking powder then you will need to triple the amount used. Also, omit the salt from the recipe.

The flavour of the cookies won’t be exactly the same. You might be able to detect acidic or salty flavours in the finished cookies, so bear that in mind before swapping the ingredients.
