Gender reveal cupcakes are all about the moment of surprise, but they also need to taste as good as they look. These cupcakes look like simple vanilla treats, then reveal a bright pink or blue heart baked right into the center depending on whether it’s a baby boy, baby girl or one of each! They’re so much fun to create and work well for baby showers and small gatherings, especially when you want a reveal that’s sweet, low-key and delicious.

Cupcakes for Gender Reveal Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Vanilla or white cake mix: Creates a neutral base that lets the reveal color stand out clearly. Either vanilla or white cake mix works well, although white cake gives the cleanest color contrast. I used the Aldi brand Bakers Corner cake mix. Any brand of cake mix should work. Just ensure you follow the instructions and keep an eye on bake time. The bake time will be less than on the box because of the modifications we’re making for this recipe.
Gel food coloring: Provides vibrant color without thinning the batter or frosting. Dragging gel color up the inside of the piping bag is a classic bakery technique and it works well because gel is highly concentrated and doesn’t change the frosting texture.
Butter: Forms the rich base of the frosting and helps it whip smoothly.
Vanilla extract: Adds warmth and balances the sweetness of the frosting.
Powdered sugar: Gives the frosting structure and a fluffy texture. Sifted powdered sugar mixes more smoothly and creates a lighter frosting.
Heavy cream: Loosens the frosting slightly for smooth piping.

Baking ingredients on a white surface: flour, butter, milk, powdered sugar, food color, piping tip, and a small bowl.

How to Make Gender Reveal Cupcakes

For more detailed instructions with weights and measurements, jump to the printable recipe card.

Tint the batter: Mix the first box of cake batter and color it evenly with pink or blue gel until the shade looks bold and consistent.
Bake the reveal cake: Spread the colored batter into parchment-lined pans and bake just until set, then leave it to cool completely.
Cut the shapes: Stamp heart shapes from the cooled cake and trim away any browned edges so the color stays clean. (I used this heart shaped cookie cutter but any small one will work).
Prepare the cupcakes: Make the second box of cake batter and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
Assemble the reveal: Spoon batter into each liner, gently press a heart into the center and cover it so it’s fully hidden.
Finish baking: Return the pan to the oven and bake until the cupcakes are cooked through and a toothpick inserted into a cupcake comes out clean, then cool before decorating.
Make the frosting: Beat the butter and vanilla until smooth, gradually mixing in powdered sugar and cream until light and fluffy.
Decorate: Streak pink and blue gel coloring inside a piping bag, fill it with frosting and swirl it onto the cooled cupcakes.

Substitutions and Variations

Cake mix swap: Any vanilla or white boxed cake mix works well as long as the batter isn’t overly thick.
Dairy switch: Whole milk can replace heavy cream in the frosting for a slightly lighter finish.
Color themes: Use purple, green or neutral colors for non-traditional reveals or themed parties.
Another frosting: Use a cream cheese frosting or your favorite frosting on these.
Shape change: Stars or circles can be used instead of hearts for a different look.
Salted butter: Unsalted butter may be used with a small pinch of added salt.
Add sprinkles: Blue sprinkles and pink sprinkles make a cute topping.

Serving Suggestions

With savory bites: Enjoy some deviled eggs, smoked salmon sliders and pizza bagel bites.
With other sweet treats: Bake ding dong cookies to go with the cupcakes or some chocolate cherry trail mix.
With cocktails:
Pair your gender reveal cupcakes with a cottontail coconut margarita or lavender vodka cocktail.
How to display them: Stack the cupcakes up on a cupcake stand. I love this gender reveal cupcake stand!

How to Store

Store: Keep frosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours. For longer storage, refrigerate frosted cupcakes for up to 3 days. Let them sit out briefly before serving so the frosting softens.
Freeze: Freeze unfrosted cupcakes for up to 2 months.
Thaw: Thaw completely and frost when ready to serve.

Top Tips

Trim the cake tops: Slice off the browned top layer from the colored cakes so the reveal looks bright and clean.
Size the hearts smaller: Use slightly smaller hearts so the color stays hidden until the cupcake is cut.
Use gel coloring: Gel gives stronger color without changing the texture of the batter or frosting.
Watch the bake: The thin cake layers and the inserted heart can change timing, so start checking early.
Leftover cupcakes: Expect extra cupcakes. This method typically yields nearly double the number of cupcakes listed on the cake mix box. Save leftover colored cake; it can be frozen or repurposed for cake pops or parfaits.

Gender Reveal Cupcakes FAQs

Will liquid food coloring work?

If you only have liquid food coloring, divide the frosting between 2 small bowls and tint each portion separately with a few drops of color. Mix gently until evenly colored, then spoon the 2 colors side by side into the piping bag. Try to keep the colors touching but not mixed. This creates a swirled, two-tone effect when piped, even without gel coloring. Keep in mind that liquid coloring produces softer pastel shades and adding too much can thin the frosting, so start with very small amounts.

How do I keep the color hidden?

Use darker or patterned cupcake liners and avoid overfilling so the heart stays fully covered.

Do I need special piping tips?

No, any large piping tip or even a cut piping bag will work for a swirled look.
