Why You’ll Love It
A quick dinner: Hibachi chicken takes less than half an hour to make from scratch.
Tastes so good: The flavor is simple yet perfectly balanced. This version is easily as good as (or better than) what you get at the restaurant.
Uses basic pantry ingredients: As long as you have some chicken breasts and a few seasonings, you have everything you need to make this chicken hibachi recipe.
Chicken Hibachi Ingredients
A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
Chicken breasts: I like to use boneless skinless chicken breasts. You could use chicken thighs if you prefer.
Cooking oil: Peanut oil, canola oil, avocado oil, vegetable oil, olive oil – take your pick!
Garlic: Fresh is best. You can add a little garlic powder too if you wish.
Butter: For flavor and a rich mouth-feel.
Sesame oil: Adds that yummy sesame flavor to the dish.

Cook the chicken: Season the diced chicken with salt and pepper. Heat a skillet over a medium high heat and add some oil and butter. Add the chicken and cook it until golden brown all over and then turn down the heat.
Add more ingredients: Add the rest of the butter, along with the sesame oil, soy sauce, and minced garlic. Simmer, stirring, for a couple of minutes. Serve hot with your cooked rice, cauliflower rice or your preferred sides.
Substitutions and Variations
Protein: Swap the chicken for steak, shrimp, pork, or tofu.
Vegetables: Stir in sliced zucchini, onions, mushrooms, shredded carrots, baby corn, or bok choy.
Butter: If you only have salted butter, use that but reduce the amount of salt added to the dish.
Spice it up: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a splash of sriracha hot sauce for a kick of heat.
Gluten-free option: Make sure your soy sauce doesn’t contain wheat gluten.
Dairy-free version: Swap the butter for coconut oil or a non-dairy spread.
Serving Suggestions
Appetizers: Begin your meal with miso mushroom soup and turkey potstickers.
Side dishes: Pair it with hibachi rice or hibachi noodles. A crispy rice salad would be good too. Don’t forget the yum yum sauce and eel sauce!
Desserts: Finish up with strawberry tiramisu.
How to Store Hibachi Chicken
Store: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Freeze: You can freeze leftover hibachi chicken in a freezer-safe container or Ziploc bag and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Thaw: Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
Reheat: Reheat in a skillet over medium heat with a splash of soy sauce and a tablespoon of butter to bring the sauce back to life.
Top Tips
Even cooking: Cut the chicken into uniform bite-sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
Get a good sear: Pat the chicken dry before seasoning with salt and pepper. This will help achieve a nice sear on the chicken pieces.
Watch the salt: To control the saltiness in this recipe, use low-sodium soy sauce and omit the salt when seasoning the chicken.
Hibachi Chicken FAQs
Yes but the cooking time might be slightly different.
It’s a style of cooking meat, vegetables and seafood over very hot metal plates. Often, hibachi restaurants have chefs that put on a show while cooking, perhaps juggling utensils or playing with fire. I’m not suggesting you have to do that (unless you want to, of course!)
