Nutty Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Salted butter: Adds richness and moisture to the cookies. If you only have unsalted butter, add a tiny pinch of salt too.
Light brown sugar: Brings sweetness and a slight caramel flavor.
White granulated sugar: Balances sweetness and helps with spreading.
Egg: Binds the ingredients and adds structure.
All-purpose flour: Creates the base for the cookie dough.
Baking powder and baking soda: Ensure lift and softness.
Semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips: Provide rich chocolate flavor in every bite.
Walnuts: Add crunch and a nutty flavor that complements the sweetness. You can get chopped walnuts at almost any grocery store, but I like to put them in a hand chopper and chop them a little more to break them up. This helps better distribute the walnut flavor throughout all of the cookies.

Ingredients for baking: walnuts, flour, sugar, brown sugar, chocolate chips, butter, salt, and baking soda on a counter.

Combine: Mix wet and dry ingredients until just blended.
Fold in mix-ins: Gently stir in chocolate chips and walnuts.
Shape and bake: Scoop cookie dough balls onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet, bake until golden brown with set edges, then cool completely on a wire rack.

Substitutions and Variations

Different chocolate: Use dark chocolate chips or white chocolate chips for variety. Chopped chocolate from a chocolate bar makes a great alternative to the chocolate chips. Chopped chocolate will melt down more than chocolate chips, giving your cookies a gooier texture. The overall flavor will be about the same either way.
Another nut: Macadamia nuts, peanuts or pecans would be good, or you could use mixed nuts.
Nut-free option: Leave out the nuts altogether or replace with sunflower seeds for similar crunch.
Gluten-free option: Substitute a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend for the all-purpose flour in this chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Extra flavor: Add a pinch of cinnamon or espresso powder for a twist. A few drops of vanilla extract works well too.
Add salt on top: These cookies are great topped with a little bit of coarse sea salt as they come out of the oven. A little salt will help balance the sweetness of the freshly baked cookies while also complimenting the nutty, earthy flavor of the walnuts.
