Substitutions and Variations
Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free beef bouillon powder (I use this one!)
Bacon bits: You can omit them if you don’t want them in there.
Beef bouillon: Sub chicken bouillon.
Sour cream: Use plain Greek yogurt or mayonnaise (or a combination of both) instead.
Add some spice: Add red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
More umami flavor: Add a teaspoon of monosodium glutamate.
More sweetness: Add some white sugar or sweetener to the mix.
Dried herbs: A spoonful of dried parsley or dried thyme would be good.
Serving Suggestions
Appetizers: Serve your French onion bacon dip with other dips, perhaps loaded slow cooker taco dip or a couple of these party dips. And chips, pretzels or veggie crudites to dip.
Main course: Why not keep the appetizer theme going with some sliders? These hot Italian sliders and these cowboy sliders are both so good. Cheesy jalapeno corn dogs are another idea.
How to Store French Onion and Bacon Dip Mix
Store: Keep the jar of soup mix somewhere dark and cool, like the pantry, and use it within a month. If you don’t add the bacon bits, it should be good for up to 2 months.
Freeze: Don’t freeze dried soup mix.
Top Tips
Bolder taste: If you want a stronger flavor, add another tablespoon of the dip mix to the cup of sour cream. Adjust as you go to get the desired strength of flavor.
Servings: The servings for the jar depend on how much dip mix is used. The jar will contain 3 to 5 servings of the dip mix for each cup of sour cream.
Stick to dried ingredients: Choose dried bacon bits instead of ones with lots of moisture (to help prolong the shelf life) and use dried garlic and onion not fresh.
Using fresh ingredients: If you want to make your own bacon bits (fry bacon, drain on a paper towel lined plate and crumble) and/or fresh minced garlic, omit the bacon bits and garlic from the jar mix recipe and instead add fresh when you’re adding the sour cream.
French Onion Bacon Dip FAQs
I used these jars for mine. You could use something similar. It’s best to use something with a tight-fitting lid to stop moisture from getting into your soup mix. If you want to make extra, either use more jars or larger jars.
This is done so the various dried and powdered ingredients can soak up some moisture from the sour cream and soften. After an hour, you can serve up this delightful snack with your favorite bites for dipping. Give it another stir beforehand to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.
